I’m leaving to Iceland in a couple of days and I am really committed to traveling light. So, I’ve decided to take only the outrageously expensive Sony RX100 iv as my main camera. I hear it’s a great little camera, if i can get thru the detailed menus before I take off. (My iPhone is my backup).

Any recommendations for a good YouTube tutorial or a readable, user friendly guide other than the online Sony manual would be greatly appreciated.

Any hints from experienced users would also be great.

Will I regret leaving my full frame or MFT with a variety of lenses at home and traveling instead with one of the smallest high quality compact bridge cameras instead?

Thanks

The RX100's are very capable cameras. If you want to increase the versatility of the camera and have the will to do a bit of study, try downloading a couple of the Playmemories Apps.

https://www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/

The 'Digital Filter' and 'Smooth Reflection' apps would be especially useful in Iceland. Consider bringing a small travel tripod instead of a bag of lenses, filters etc.

Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words. I'm using my new little RX100 (actually a version 6, not 4 as I mistakenly stated) more and more each day, and I am getting the hang of it. I am truly amazed at the clarity of the images, far surpassing that of my Nikon 500D, Leica Q, Lumix 85, all pretty respectable cameras. I think I'm going to be OK. And I will get this crazy complicated menu system down pat before I leave on Sunday.
Thanks, again.

The VI is probably an even better travel camera than either the III or the IV. Great choice, and it'll always be with you, whenever you wish to record a memory. Good!

I prefer the Sony HX99V with it's 24 to 750 mm Zeiss lens that fits into my belt pouch.

Very capable camera! The expense is worth it in the right hands with the right eye. Good luck and be sure and share when you return!

A major downside for me with the rx100 is that you cannot do off camera flash easily.

That's why I bought the Sony RX100 II, has a flash shoe in the top and you can get a off camera flash cord to connect to your Sony flash for off camera flash. But generally I just point the flash head up and behind me.

Depends on the purpose of your trip. I just returned Wednesday from a week long trip to the Central Highlands of Iceland. If you're going to see Iceland and take some travel photos you'll be fine. If your purpose is to do some serious photography take everything you can carry!

Some incredible light with sunset at 23:30 and sunrise at 3:30.

You are experiencing my constant dilemma. My default questions include:
1. Have I been there before and is this destination known for unusual photo ops?
2. Why do I own the expensive gear if I am not going to use it?
3. What can I not take to make room for my camera gear and what is the smallest bag I can take to hold my camera and lenses?

If you go light and miss the shots, you can always go back, right?

It is very possible that you could do very well with your Sony but why not take something like the MFT with lenses for a trip that could easily be the trip of a lifetime. I say the same about the full frame.
You seem to be learning your new Sony camera and that is not the way to travel with a new camera. You know your MFT and your full frame cameras better so shooting should be much easier with something you already know.
If I were traveling to Iceland for sure I would take one of my cameras with interchangeable lenses along with my tripod. You could regret not doing so.

Why waste money on gear if you are not going to take it where it will provide the best photos possible?
I do not understand why people on this site invest thousands on the latest whatever then take trips to exotic places and take the modern version of an instamatic. Leave the 5 extra pairs of shoes or 15 extra clothes changes home.
Take you good stuff or just sell it all and keep the little Sony full time.

At the end of the day, I guess it is the purpose of the trip that matters most. If it is sightseeing and capturing whatever comes along, the Sony should meet your needs. If it is to capture a number of great photos with photography being the main purpose for the trip, I might be inclined to take one of your interchangeable lens cameras. Have a great trip.

About 2 years ago we went to Iceland. I took a Canon G3x and had a wonderful time and came back with terrific images. Travelling light especially on a non-photographic tour is liberating and, in my opinion, ends up with better travel photographs. Enjoy the trip.
