Can anyone tell me how I can download pics from a compact flash card to the new ipad without using my Canon 7D? I'm told I need a powered flash drive. What is it?
You can put your pictures into Dropbox on your computer and then download them to the iPad.

For 2 years I have downloaded directly from my Canon 7D to my iPad. I KEEP the images on my Canon flash card and download them to my PC later. Each day we traveled we look ed at the images taken that day. I did not take my PC with me.
Using the power/transfer cord that came with my Canon and adding a iPad connector was all I needed.
I've heard that there is a problem removing pictures from the iPad. Anything to that?
I'm having the same problem. I, too, have the CF card slot but the ipad won't take it. The message is there's not enough power. Can you tell me exactly what you ordered and can I buy it at Best Buy?

Mithch, here is what I ordered from Amazon. CF Card Reader CF1 CF II Connection Kit For APPLE The New iPad. I won't get until late next week. After I get it I'll do a follow-up. Here is a web site on utube that has another one but having trouble finding what was being shown on utube listed on Amazon, I decided to try the one I ordered. Here is the u-tube site,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGrB__jHpWc&feature=youtube_gdata_playerI just checked this out on Amazon and it looks exactly like the apple connection kit That I have, an sd slot and USB slot. I think it will send same "not enough power" message. Keep me informed if it works.

I've had my ipad a month or so and learned what works and what does not. I developed a procedure for each task I want to accomplish. I used UHH, the on-line App store, i-tunes, yada, yada, yada. I do use the Applecard reader but there is none for Compact Flash cards--just SD. I use Dropbox(a free ipad app)--I like it. I had the "not enough" power message and moved to something else. Technology is a journey and will never be a destination.
My workflow is take the card out of the camera. Put it into the card reader on my PC, import it all into LR4. Pick, delete, do 80% of my editing in Camera RAW, then PSE9, CS6, NX2, or Topax FX for more detailed editing, resizing, keywords, then filter and organize for my external my backup drive. Move a few images at a time to my desktop for email, moving to a flash drive for display at camera club meetings to display in FastStone. I use the Dropbox for sending large files to be externally printed for framing. Let the journey continue.
Makes me appreciate the "old" technology that works, versus the new that doesn't.

Give it a few years. It will soon become "old" and work fine. :D

I just use the iPad to USB adaptor and put the card reader into that adaptor. 7d and it works without any fuss or muss or "powered" anything. I have not tried using an SD card into the forementioned iPad adaptor or using it with a card reader for SD cards.

It will accept the raw file but it will not show the raw thumbnail. The raw files will transfer. I do it all the time with no special app required.
Any files you transfer must be in a DCIM named folder otherwise the iPad ignores it.

You don't need an app if all you want to do is have the reader dump the photos in your built in iPad photos folder. You do need the adaptor mentioned. It adapts the iPad connection to a standard USB plug which you then plug your card reader into.
They make one that accepts the card directly.
You DO need something other than the adaptor. The ipad WON'T accept CF cards! It DOES take SD cards. And therin lies the difference.
This discussion, spread over two pages, is a perfect example of what is wrong with modern electronics - too many differences and too little compatibility.
