Can anyone tell me how I can download pics from a compact flash card to the new ipad without using my Canon 7D? I'm told I need a powered flash drive. What is it?

You need a card reader connected to the Apple Camera Connection kit and the appropriate app. See the app store for the latter. You don't need a "powered flash drive."
You don't need an app if all you want to do is have the reader dump the photos in your built in iPad photos folder. You do need the adaptor mentioned. It adapts the iPad connection to a standard USB plug which you then plug your card reader into.
I have the Apple card readers, but they do not accept the size of the compact flash card. Sorry I don't understand what you are telling me. Can you direct me to a site for and what I need to buy. Thanks.I

Right. If all you want to do is dump your CF card, once you get everything plugged in the built-in software will let you upload. Depending on your IOS, you may have a few options.

The Apple Camera Connection kit has two cables. Get a USB card reader, put
your CF card in the right slot and plug the reader cable into the USB cable on the kit.
The adaptor I have connects to the port n the iPad and the other end is a standard USB receiver, no cables. Apples sells them. I know Best Buy has them too. You need a card reader that accepts your card with a standard USB male connector.
Thanks, but no this does not work. I have the reader you're referring to and when I tried it my screen says device does not have enough power. Checking utube it is explaiined that I need a powered flash drive. I've ordered one ($19), and will be glad to let you know it works if anyone is interested.

I have the same problem. I try downloading sd card and flash drive, I get same message "not enough power". I'd like to know what you are getting and if it works, thanks.

Mithch, here is what I ordered from Amazon. CF Card Reader CF1 CF II Connection Kit For APPLE The New iPad. I won't get until late next week. After I get it I'll do a follow-up. Here is a web site on utube that has another one but having trouble finding what was being shown on utube listed on Amazon, I decided to try the one I ordered. Here is the u-tube site,

I have another device which is essentially designed to accomplish the same task. It consists of a housing with a USB female socket at one end, a male plug at the other end, two AA batteries, a directional switch, a power on/off button and a transfer button; it is approximately the size of a business card and thick enough to house the batteries. When USB first came out, I had to use it often to transfer data from a 3-1/2" floppy drive to my computer. Neither the floppy drive nor my USB card would power the transfer, but this device worked fine. (And it saved me from having a highly visible 3-1/2" drive glaring at visiting executives from the prominent front of my "company" computer.) As soon as I can dig it out of storage and put in new batteries, I'll give it a try (I sure hope I removed the batteries when it was stored). The only problem I might encounter is one of USB compatibility; the device is early USB (1.0 or even Beta 0.0?) and everything else is USB 2.0. I'll post my results here and, if it works, the specs and/or a photo of the device also.
I'm not sure why you are getting the not enough power notice. If you are trying to use an external USB hard drive then yes but not a card reader. Very odd.
This is a common problem with the Ipad. The ipad tells you not enough power for USB transfer, one way around this is to transfer pictures from CF card to computer to SD card.
Why do you NOT want to unload the images from your Canon 7D?
For 2 years I have downloaded directly from my Canon 7D to my iPad. I KEEP the images on my Canon flash card and download them to my PC later. Each day we traveled we look ed at the images taken that day. I did not take my PC with me.
Using the power/transfer cord that came with my Canon and adding a iPad connector was all I needed.
