I found the one I was thinking about and mentioned in my earlier post. This is from the Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, NJ ca 1780. This fellow buried two wives, and 5 children - ages 7, 19, 22, and 23 and one died at birth. And this was all too typical. Anybody who pines for 'the good old days' is insane.

This is seriously heart-breaking.

(And to your commentary: Maybe it's not so much that I want to return to the so-called "good old days" as it is that I would like to return to a simpler time, when a hard-day's work was spiritually rewarding if not financially, so. We have lots of advances these days which make for an easier life, surely... but at what cost? A big one, imo.)

This poor man...

Well, not to get off the track, but if your work is not now "spiritually rewarding", it is not the fault of the times. I am not sure how spiritually rewarding subsistence farming was for 99% of the people on earth for 10,000 years. I fail to see how proper sanitation, more food than we can carry, relatively decent medical care, and a life expectancy over twice what is was a century ago is a 'cost'. The grass is not always greener, my dear.

I wasn't referring to the cost to humanity... but this might make an excellent thread in the discussion section.
What do ya think!?

I found this headstone on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The farm depicted on the stone was across the road, in a seriously run down and overgrown condition, with no one living there.

There is an old cemetary about three minutes from my house. It sits on a hill by the entrance to the highway. I have often noticed how it looks in the morning or at sunset in the fall. There are several old tombstones there. This post has inspired me to do some photography there. Nice photos!

Love older portions of cemeteries. Some good pictures here. I'll add this one.

This is my favorite cemetery of all time. I have spent literally hours here. They offer some wonderful tours. When I had to spend one summer in Cleveland I would bring any and all visitors here.

I too like graveyard shots. I'm very much an amateur photographer and took this shot as an assignment for a high school photo class I got to sit in on.

I also spend many hours in this cemetery. It is literally next door to my Cleveland, Ohio apartment

Our Cemetery Memorial in 2008...The Oakes Cemetery is on our property and comprises 5 acres in size...the oldest headstone is in the early 1850's...My husband has 6 generations buried there and now too, our youngest son...Pictured is his baby daughter, Alisha who helped with the "cemetery working" the day before the memorial...
