I have compared prints done by COSTCO and two professional labs. COSTCO prints were at least as good as the pro prints. They have their printers calibrated and adjusted, every year so if you calibrate your screen, you will get accurate colors. If you do not calibrate your screen, let them do any adjustment. It will be close or perfect.

Maybe none of us use a printer profile...........

Maybe you just have yet to learn about ICC color management.

Canon, Epson, HP, and all the printers used by labs use profiles.

Every image you save or print has a profile tag (in EXIF data), and some embed the profile in the file.

Your monitor has a default profile, and a custom profile if you make one.

Your camera has a raw profile used in post processing. AND, it uses that profile to convert images to sRGB or Adobe RGB when you save a JPEG at the camera.

We all use profiles ALL the time.

All well and good for some people, but I don't download profiles and/or install them anywhere.
If something does it transparent to me , that's fine, and I don't know about it, Nor do I care.
I am pleased with the way Costco prints what I send them, however they do it. (No color correcting.)
If I need to precisely match the monitor to the print, I'll look at the print and adjust the settings on the monitor.

And you know I'm not a professional, correct?
So maybe I don't.

I have decided to try to do some photo printing, for the purpose of sharing images beyond Facebook by actually printing them on paper.

My understanding is that it is possible to work with my computer and the printer at Costco, using a "profile". However, I have no clue how to actually do it.

I have a 27" Mac and use Photos and PSE.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Just send your photos without YOU doing anything to them. If you edit them in the computer, you better know how to use Photoshop and how to CORRECTLY edit the photos in a way that when they apply their profile, they don’t destroy what you did in your computer. Think about this. All these companies know how to print and they all know how to do it very well without 95% of their customers knowing how to edit their photos. This goes back to the days when everyone was shooting with film and no one knew what a color profile was, all mini labs or professional photo labs truly know how to print, even from badly expose or underexposed files. It is their business to know!!. Don’t believe that because some people here will tell you, you are not going to learn how to do everything overnight. Just send all your jpg files to Costco and pick up the next day. They are much better than any drug store or other cheap labs out there.

Like others have said, talk to the folks at Costco about the profile and how to install it. Or just google > How to install Costco's Color Profile into Adobe Photoshop Elements. Also, ask Costco what Color space they require you to use for their printing. It's Probably sRGB. If that's the case, then the image file needs to be in that color space. So, after finishing your edit and you think you are ready to print, you would need to do what's called. Proof colors. The computer will show you pretty close what your image will look like if printed using, in this case, Costco's Printer Profile. It's not exact, but it's close. Things to remember, the computer monitor you are using to edit and view your image on should be color calibrated to ensure accurate colors. I don't do much printing anymore but back when my wife and I were competing in our Photo club's monthly print competition we used Costco for 11x14 prints. Funny story. In the club, every month we would have a guest speaker/professional speaking on specific topics. One month, a local Professional Photographer that owned her own local gallery business was the judge for our print competition. The speaker was going on and on about why you should send your best images to a professional lab for editing and development. My wife received a 1st place finish on one of her prints. The speaker/also the judge in the contest, was critiquing my wife's image. She was going on and on about the excellent color etc. She asked whose print it was and what pro lab was used for printing. My wife was very excited, she raised her hand and said proudly, " Costco's for less than 3 dollars! It was an awkward moment for the speaker. LOL. Good luck with your prints. And as always, ask if you have questions. This forum is filled with amazing talent and knowledge.

You & Wife were Lucky, Some of these Professional Photographers are Stupid Ass Jerks, Putting Down People About the Camera they Shoot it From, or, where you Got it Printed, Or How Many Megapixels you Shot the Photo From, Etc.

I have Seen Amateur Photographers Degraded & Put Down By Pro Photographers Regarding the Camera they Used, the Type of Film, when Film Cameras were "King" Back in the Day, if it was a Pocket Digital, The Pros Attitude was... Negative, & Would Put Down An Amateur Photographer, Cause of the Pocket Camera He or She Used to Shoot a High Quality Photo, & the Pro's Didn't Care if it was a $300.00 Hi-End Nikon, Canon, Or Sony, the Amateur Photographer Would Get Spit On by a Jerk Ass Professional, because He Or She Thinks Their "Big Time" Cause they Walk Around with a $3000 to $5000 Dollar High End Nikon or Canon, or Sony's Around their Necks, Along with Expensive Lenses Attached to them.

& Yes they are Better Hi-End Cameras, & Can Really do the Job, in All Weather, & Low Light, but An Amateur Cant Afford What the Pros have, & Prefer A Smaller Lighter Camera that has the Best Features, & Now Camera Phones Are Now Kicking Ass!

I'm Glad you & your Wife were Not Put Down By this Pro, & Accepted your Work, but I Feel Sorry for Others who are Put Down By the Jerk Pro Photographer who Thinks their "Big Shots" with Hi-End Cameras, & Lenses, & Other Hi Quality Equipment, & Rubs it in An Amateurs Face.

The only problem with Costco is that they closed every photo center in the stores in most of the southern U.S. They claimed they were not making enough money per square foot .

Their Going Strong here in Southern California, I was at the Hawthorne, California Store, a Few Miles from LAX (L.A. Airport), the Day Before Memorial Day, & the Photo Counter was "Full Blast!"

I went to a home printer to do my photos, no complaints. Ink is a little costly but I am satisfied. I won't advertise what brand of printer though.

As long as you are pleased with the results, does it really matter what brand???

Sadly the Costco just up the road from me has closed their photo printing counter. I used them for most of my printing work, far cheaper than doing it myself. Their personnel really knew their stuff. They knew profiles, so I could output files which needed no correction.
I had them print to 8 x 12 a BW shot made on Kentmere 100, IIRC, scanned in on my Epson V700. The print from Costco was excellent! Not a hint of color tinge. Of course I'd furnished them with a really good image, shot with a Pentax ME Super, with either a Takumar 135mm f2.5 or a Pentax 50mm f1.2, processed in D 76, and critically sharp.

I bring a thumb drive to staples. They will print large prints if you want, on whatever photo surface you want.

I'm in Canada and go on line to our Costco. Make all the right selections, sizes and types etc and in most cases the prints are there the next day, or a week if you are requesting canvases or metal prints. IF you walk in with your thumb drive, prints could be one hour away. Prices are the best.

If you go to https://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/ and click on your state, there will be a list of all Costco's in that state and a link for the profiles of the printers in that store. You can download these profiles and use them to prep your files for online submission to Costco.

You might first try submitting a few test prints without using the profiles to see if they meet your quality needs. There is a box you can check or not check (at the end of the order process) to indicate whether or not you want corrections to occur. Costco does an outstanding job and meets my needs for most projects. For something really special I use Tempe Camera. Hope this helps.
