Depends on what camera you are using.
Canon EOS RP Mirrorless Digital . 100-400 telephoto lens.

Got it. Salt water and cameras do not mix at all. Going to pick non choppy water days to photo shoot, cover the lens with a polarized clear filter and invest in waterproof camera bags. Thank you
I would have two or three clear filters, so you can change them and keep a fairly clean filter on.
Yes, this method is great.
As for the question in topic, I know many pro sailing photographers and their gear doesn't just disintegrate. Same for surf photographers. You do need to treat it well. I live at the beach in the salt spray and do lots of very low angle surf shots. I've not seen problems. I know of people with more problems who live in areas with fine dust.
I do use nice-ish clear filters. I've got the Hoya Pro1 Digital Protectors. Do I change them out? No. I clean them per the video above.
For an average day on the water, I am not getting spray on my gear. I don't do much. If there is mist, think about a rain cover. You don't want salt water getting inside. If there is spray, you want a good enclosure. Search google for "photographing volvo ocean race". Those guys were in a fire-hose most of the time.
If I'm getting spray, a damp rag to wipe things down. If I get spray on my glass, I rinse it off exactly like the sunglasses folks recommend. The tech in the sunglasses is similar enough.
Another good example is a tanker captain who mounted a D7200 outside and did a time lapse for months. The resulting video is like 15 minutes, but really cool. Again, camera did fine until one particularly bad thunder storm.

The best filter line IMHO is SCHNEIDER which uses higher quality glass and coatings and a brass frame ... but expensive.
The best lower priced IMHO are TIFFEN and HOYA.
If you don’t need one immediately I suggest EBAY.
What does IMHO stand for?
