There was a time when a young lady looking forward to matrimony would seek to display her culinary abilities to her hopeful husband to be. Does this practice still not occur? And what's so sexist about it?

Once long ago I had a student complain "Our microwave broke and I can't make my instant hot coco." Some of the other girls told her to boil the water on the stove - her reply - Huh ????

So for many today that would be showing off how well she could follow the microwave directions on the TV dinner.

or maybe

How many takeout places she had on speed dial.

There was a time not that long ago when this would not even be funny, because it would be true. Both of my grandmothers and my mother loved to cook. The kitchen was their domain, and boy, could they cook. I'd take their food over any of the so called gourmet stuff the restaurants put out today. I just never knew how good I had it growing up. I was doubly lucky. Not only was my Mom a fantastic cook, but she made the best pies ever....not to mention cinnamon rolls and cookies. I've also never had an egg over easy done to perfection like Mom's.

It was also true of so many who grew up in the depression and cooked from scratched rather than from a box. There just weren't fast food restaurants back in the day and not many restaurants to speak of. And these women guarded their kitchens as though it were under attack by foreign invaders. It was serious!! It WAS their she-cave. In those days, the man cave was either the basement or garage. Real fancy digs!!

I have never cooked from a box..............everything I cook is done from scratch!! for the last 64 years of marriage.

Where I worked years ago we had some bazaar shifts when it was busy. The company paid the keep the warehouse kitchen well stocked with hot and cold cereal, milk and other breakfast foods. Each shift had a two hour overlap and during the monthly busy period, which at end of year lasted from January first to mid February, when a lot of people worked doubles, the relief morning shift would cover for the night shift while they took a breakfast break. There was one young lady who never joind in. Her reason was somewhat odd; it appears her mommy did everything for her, including pour her breakfast cereal and clean up afterwards. Since mommy wasn't there to take care of her, she didn't bother. She apparently didn't have a problem pouring her own cereal and milk, it was cleaning the bowl and spoon afterwards. How very odd...!

in 1972 I went to New Zealand, on a bus tour, and shared the rooms with a 40 year old unmarried woman. The first night out, nearing bed time she asked me to make her a cup of cocoa. as her mum always do so.!

I told he A...there is no cocoa. B... I was not there to mother her. LOL

Regardless of the lack of cocoa, part two of your response hit the nail right in the middle of the hammer head. What, did she think you were sent along to serve her?
Over the years I've learned there are people who test others to see what they can get away with. Lazy self centered people who for some unknown reason believe those around them are supposed to be their surrogate mommy.
I have a sister who fits well into that description. She lives by herself about an hour and a half from me. We invited her to our home for Christmas but since she no longer drives (a vision thing), I'd have to go get her and take her home. The plan was for her to stay a few days but since she knows neither my wife or myself will wait on her she had to come up with a way to gain the upper hand. She has doctor appointments on the 24th and 26th that she claims she couldn't reschedule. That means I'd have to pick her up on Christmas Eve and take her home Christmas night. Obviously her intension was not coming to my home for Christmas at all because no one will treat her like she feels she should be treated, like the queen bee. Just because she's older than me doesn't mean squat in my book. Oh well, I guess a simple phone call on Christmas day will have to do because there's no way I'm going to be her personal uber; have way too much other stuff to do. Her loss...!

My daughter is a 1st year Medical Student at the the University of Virginia.
She rents the second bedroom of a large apartment from the lease holder.
The lease holder is a Jr Professor at the University (not the medical school though). When Jasmine first moved in on Aug 1st (she had Mom with her the first 10 days) this women expected Jasmine to clean the fridge (a mess), wash all the dishes and empty the trash which she let overflow onto the floor. Well, Mom took Jasmine to the store and bought dishwasher soap, cleaning supplies, trash bags and a second trash can for the kitchen and the bathroom (she already had dishes, pots and pans etc from her 4 years at UCLA) then she and Jasmine divided the stuff in the fridge in half, cleaned her half of the fridge and freezer, did her dishes separately, emptied "her" trash cans etc. By the time Mom left after the "White Coat" ceremony on the 10th day of the semester the message had been received. Just because you are a PhD candidate and part time Assistant Associate Professor of Creative Writing or some such did not mean that the young lady who rented your spare bedroom and was a Medical Student was going to be your maid. She sorta started to take care of her own business and stopped expecting to be waited on.
I understand she pouts and does "I am just so put upon!" really well. But without Jasmine's rent money she would have to move out, and Jasmine has a contract for the duration and got put on the lease for the apartment by the landlord.

Yes, my sister is a user. As for Dr. Phil, I don't place a whole lot of value in much of anything the so call doctor, not a physician mind you, a psychologist, has to say. Do you know the character Dr. Bull in the TV show Bull was based on Dr. Phil?!

Actually, not even a psychologist - he lost his clinical license because of ethical violations.
