Hello Bob those are great, and you are right about no rules to photography..see some of mine.

Rob, thanks for the replies! Every time I visit an upscale nursery in my area I am drawn to their orchid displays...extremely beautiful and interesting plants. Nice photos...and pets.

Bob... I loved your preface. I also don't follow the 'rule' of thirds. I really like the term guideline. I think the 'thirds' concept works great for landscapes but not for everything.

Outstanding images, I particularly liked #3.

John, appreciate your comments and your photos! Until just recently, I maintained a butterfly garden and the Passion Flower was a host plant for the Gulf Frittilary. Even though they are rare up here, I included one in my garden. Thanks,

Bob

In reply to MWAC - I think they called it a Purple Passion Flower, but I've heard most people refer to it as just a Passion Flower.

It was my favorite.

John here are some more of mine...

Great pics, loved the second one. I spent hours in a field of daisy's trying to catch a bee in flight. No luck. Great job. When I'm out there trying to catch a certain image I can certainy appreciate how difficult it is when someone else does.

I haven't given up though! :)

How refreshing. No rules photography!!! Just take the photo of the subject you like, composed how you like, from the angle you like, and under the lighting you like.
Hmmm. Sounds like stress free photography to me. That's the way I like it.
Oh and Bob. I love the shots. Well done and welcome to the forum.

Let me preface this by telling you that I am 77 years old and have been involved with photography since I was about twelve years old. That's a long time to develop opinions and I have certainly developed enough of my own. Most of my flower and insect shots are centered intentionally. It has been my experience that "rules" do not exist in photography..."guidelines" do. As for lighting, our best source is from nature and natural light is totally different at different times of day and in different weather conditions. Likewise, many, many wonderful pictures are shot using various sources of artificial light. Proper light and composition is what pleases the photographer unless your intent is to market them. Many of the photos that I share with you will violate some principles of photography but they represent what I liked at the time!

It is a pleasure to be with you...

You've started quite an interest. I also think macro work on flowers defies "rules". Here are a few.
