I'll 2nd that.
food for thought; When W10 was first announced there was a way offered to do a clean install rather than upgrade. I chose to go that route and have had zero OS problems ever since.

You might have missed the boat to move over to Windows 10 for free. You should have set sail months ago. My only advice is computer technology only moves forwards and never in reverse. Windows 11 will be next. Get ready to Go! Go! Go! "But you will have to pay for this one" Bill needs to top up his pension, 😉

I did just that last month, following the link in that article. Even though Microsoft stopped pushing people to upgrade long ago, apparently the free upgrade is still available. Like any such major upgrade, the process takes the better part of a day, but the computer is running fine with 10. Didn't lose any personal files either. I would warn that Windows 10 likes at least 8 GB of RAM memory where 7 was fine with 4 GB. Windows 10 will still work with less memory, but programs like Photoshop slow down quite a bit. Why would Microsoft keep advertising a free upgrade when people are willing to pay for it? But it can still be had for free as far as I know.

That was an excellent choice. I did not choose to go that way, but I could have. I upgraded within 1 week of the first version being issued - never looked back. I love Win10!!

I uploaded Windows10 for free a few years ago. Have had nothing but problems. Windows XP gave me the least number of problems. That was a good reliable OS. but of course XP did not contain all the bells & whistles that W10 does. But at least it worked.

Windows 10 is the fasted, most secure and most reliable version of Windows ever made. Since I don't know the particulars of your experience I can't comment on why it was a disaster for you, but your experience is the exception and not the rule.

When it comes to technology, be it cameras or computers or post processing software you're much better off keeping up with the latest. Try using an outdated computer with new software you're going to have nothing but problems. If NASA tried using the same old systems they used for the first moon walk they would never have made it to Mars. Are you still driving a car with a carburetor, points and distributor? Are you still using a rotatory dial phone? Are you still washing your cloths in a ringer-type washing machine? You get my point.

It was my understanding that "Win10 will be the last version". It is supposed to be updated continually, so the Win10 that was available initially for free is not the same Win10 that you would get today. And probably that one isn't the same Win10 you will get next month.

I updated a 2015 Win7 machine to Win10 recently. Win10 works fine for the most part but there are a few things that are annoying. Also there are some differences between the machine I updated and a 2016 laptop that came with Win10, even though they both get updated when Microsoft feels like it. Some of the differences may be due to hardware differences between the laptop and desktop.

At my age the problem can sometimes be "PEBCAK"

Because Apple upgrades are free... I haven’t paid for a MacOS upgrade in a decade. Giving it away means lower support costs for them. People upgrade faster, so help desk support is more efficient. Training is easier, and users burn bridges to old hardware faster and more willingly.

I did it with my computer but I did it over time one upgrade at a time as they came up. Don't know about one jump. I was told the 7 to 8 was a major change but don't know or remember.
I recently had a solid state drive put in to run the computer, with the old drive staying in with the info stored still on it. I had it done as the step from 7 to 8 was a problem. My wife did the same hard drive set up and it was simple as her computer was originally a 8.
This hard drive insert set up speeded the computers almost like new machines.

Yes I wanted Win 7 when I got my laptop in early 2017. It came with Win 10 on the partitioned hard drive. When I opened the software disk package that came with the computer there was NO Win 7 install disks and NO product registration code. When I contacted the HP company they stated the code was one the computer mother board. If I were to install Win 10, the computer would know the code. Yes I wonder if I chose now to up grade now I would get the old Win 10 and have all this upgrade changes coming. The last three months the computer internet people are saying that Win 10 has more problems.
Many of you here say that is not true. I have used Windows since DOS, Win 2000, even Vista and never had problems with blue screens. I am still at "7 64bit Pro and Happy. Just never got the registration code.

Having had and building many machines, Windows XP followed by 7 were the best running OS that I have had on my machines. Went to 10 many months ago and finally went back to 7. Thought 10 would have had the problems worked out by now so I went back to 10 again. Still wish I had the 7 back or even XP. Seems to me that this is just a scam by Microsoft to convince all to upgrade to their "newest" systems to pad their wallets.

Having talked to several long time friends who are now heavy duty computer nerds, (a couple of them nerds for over 40 years), here is what they told me about Window 7, 8, and 10 last year.

Windows 7 was basically the last of the modifiable systems. Many low level computer nerds complained because they couldn't jump into the system with relative ease and modify things.

Windows 8 came out for a short time and security started ramping up. Most low to medium level nerds didn't like it as they were not able to modify things as before.

After that Windows 8.5 hit the playing field but was actually only used for some big time corporates and hard wired things. It was a very secure operating system but not out for the general public. Some trusted people got it to play around with kind of like when you would use a beta version of something to get the bugs out.

Then Windows 10 came out for the masses. They skipped 9 for some reason. Several operating systems are being worked on all the time. A guestimation was that Win 9 still had a bunch of previous bugs and Microsoft decided to not spend the time and money cleaning it up. They choose to just go to Win 10 since it already had been cleaned up.

With 10 Microsoft also provided a "new" operation "engine" that prevented most people from tinkering with it. It had some initial holes in it but they were filled in for the better part.

My thoughts here are that Win 10 made alot of use in the clouds. From there, many things from bad guys were instantly removed, providing a fresh clean version everytime you were hooked up to the internet, but that was never verified as valid or not.

The small time and medium computer nerds really heated that one. They basically could not modify it nor could they get into other people's systems without permission or the other people download something they should not have in the first place.

With more and more upgrades to Win 10 it got much more secure. Only the big time nerds could do things to the system but that was getting harder and harder.

There are some here and there although most are unknowingly let in by the person, like when you download from a unsecure site. Never download anything from a site that doesn't have an "S" in front of the http: address. That's a good start!

Another thing, when you go to a seemingly valid site and they want you to click on a button, look at where that button is going. Its possible that was redirected to a faulty site just to get information from you. That is often call Phishing. (Pronounced Fishing)

Windows 10 is a out the best OP system so far, you'll love it. Just embrace it, don't reject it.

One more thing, Windows 10 was supposed to be the last Windows. Upgrade are about it. Some here have mentioned a version 11. They never told me about that and I never asked.

I find 10 to be easy and reliable, but be prepared for a boatload of crap you don't want or need. It is clearly made for people that have their entire computer experience by phones. It took me a while to understand that PS isn't PS anymore, it's not a program anymore, it's an app. And lots of stuff on the basic screen that wants to direct us to things that only a 15 year old wants. Apparently the dominant use for computers is games. And I thought it was for porn. What a fool I am.

Burkphoto is right. All the Apple upgrades are free and often done for security and to run with the latest software.
Final Cut Pro was $300 when I bought the 2nd generation which as been outstanding. After that all upgrades are free
and the App store tells you if you want it its is their.
I mentioned before that I have had PC's over the years with high hopes. Realizing the unlike Apple they huge
supplying the worlds people and businesses. And so much more affordable then Mac.
I had a tough book and recently a cheaper HP laptop. The upgrades on the tough book had to be in increments
and cost and didnt work. You could stay online forever wondering if you had it. The HP said Windows 10 ready and free.
Never worked tried many times. Found out not compatible with HP laptop.
I would like a loaded PC now for my video work at a good price. Now read the Windows 10 is problematic.

Totally agree. Windows 10 is the most solid OS I’ve used since my days in 1991 using Windows 3.0 in work.

Funny story. In January 1992 I bought my first PC. I was looking at a Gateway (?) 386/33 tower system. My best friend said to me “buy a 486/66 system ... it’s ALL the computer you will EVER need! So I did, for $4,500 ... which was a lot of money in those days, and still is. Goes to show you how far technology has gone in the last 30 years. No one can really wrap their head around Moore’s Law, which states that the speed of computing power doubled every 18 months.

I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) for many years from the mid seventies to early nineties. Even the founder Ken Olsen couldn’t wrap his head around Moore’s Law, and he was a brilliant computer scientist! He built a company of 130,000 people, around mini computers, but in 1987 proclaimed that PC’s were toys, which led to his and the company’s eventual demise. Ironically, DEC was bought by Tandem Computers, and then Tandem was bought by Compaq, a PC company! Talk about full circle!
