They are a bit large for pocket compatibility. A couple of months ago, I left my SX-50 at my condo 300 miles away and needed that capability at home. I searched and found that the Nikon A900 (it is a little over your budget) IS a portable camera that has a great zoom lens range and produces sharp images. I retrieved the SX-50 on my last trip but I am still using the A900 more because of its portability. Check it out.

+1 on the A 900. I bought one as a fits-in-the-pants-pocket backup to my DSLR. Image quality has been great, except in very low light. No smart phone can match the zoom. You can find one for under $400

My wife wanted a camera like that for similar reasons. I talked her into getting the best Point & Shoot offered by Canon. At the time it was the Canon G10 which allowed me as a pro to take Raw files, do manual setting, manual focus and she could use all of the popular amateur settings. Best of both worlds. Well we ended up replacing that one with the Canon G1X which is a later model with more pixels but same ability to do Raw files & Jpeg. Both fit into a pocket, are small and unobtrusive with small 4 to 1 zooms but very nice image quality. I did not want the cheaper point and shoots either and the ones I bought both had optical viewfinders or could use live view, whichever worked at the time. The G1X has an articulated LCD screen which comes in handy for low view type shots so you don't have to lay on the ground. They make newer models but we got the G1X for about $249 since it was a few models old. Not sure what your price range is. These cameras suggested prices were $500 and $700 so your getting the top of the line cameras for that days technology for a great discount. Might look into that as an option. Go to www.steves-digicams.com to see a very comprehensive review of any camera.

My wife is looking for a point and shoot camera. Her main concern is that it should have an optical viewfinder instead of just a viewing screen. Would be nice if it could fit in a pocket. She has a couple of DSLR cameras, and she is looking for one that she can always have with her. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Canon S100. Great little pocket camera!
