Today I was in Wheeling, in the rain, trying to take photos of buildings for a friend from Texas who used to live here. I was on the phone, trying to locate buildings that had new identies, and like a doofus, I stuck my Canon SX710HS in my pocket. I screwed up the very delicate cover blades on the lens. Now it's either rip them off, or send it to Canon. The only brick n mortar in this area is the Best Buy where I purchased it. Or drive to Columbus or Kent, Ohio, 2+ hours away.

I'm asking for: how do I contact Canon to send this back for repairs.

Well, you could type "Canon Repair" in your search engine and get:

Looks like you can get this camera used off Ebay for around $130.00 and some change. So, you have a couple of options. You can send to Canon and find what it will cost to fix. You can try to tear the blades off and see if it will still work, I have done this to a couple of old Nikon point and shoots and they still worked fine. You can buy a used one off ebay if you screw up on the blade peel off thing. If you do send to Canon u could be without a camera for a while so figure on that to.

I have the SX700HS model and did the same thing. The blades wouldn't open fully and after downloading pictures I realized that there was a problem (two opposite corners were blocked). I started forcing the blades to open for the next several times I used it, and eventually it started functioning once again. A jacket pocket is okay but jeans pockets certainly aren't.

If it works, just keep using it. No DSLR has those leaves covering the lens, and they work okay. A repair would probably cost more than a used replacement.

Don't be surprised if they say they don't repair them. That was the case with my Canon SX50. Lower end cameras are probably expected to just be replaced rather than repaired. Parts, labor, design...

Didn't they offer a discount for a new model? Some companies do that when they don't fix old models any more or beyond repair.

They did, but I thought it was because my warranty had only run out five weeks prior. Plus the LCD stopped working; I didn't "break" it per se

I would not be surprised if they offer a discount to the OP, but I'd compare prices with other sites before accepting.

And to clarify a bit further about the sx50: they told me they don't repair them, period. I think I had to mail it to them first, though, and then they said they could take $100 off price of new sx50.

But after encouragement from UHH members, I called again and was able to find someone with the authority to replace my camera for free since was "only" five weeks beyond the factory warranty and because I pointed out how much I had been promoting the camera on this forum

I had a similar issue with my panasonic zs50. I found an old soligar 135mm lens in my "maybe I'll get an adapter" box which had a push on lens cap that fit around the zs50's lens structure. So if you can get the blades to stay out of the way, you might find a push-on lens cap that fits the outside of your camera's lens structure.

Yeah! I see a lot of electronic based products were designed so that they can be put together easily but not taking apart. So they are not repairable or take a lot more effort to repair than assembling a new one from scratch.

The cover blades on my Canon Elph have been broken for years. The lens, however, is fully functional, and still shoots great photos, so I haven't even considered fixing it.

There is a great camera shop in on the east side of Kent, Ohio .... Campus Camera .... ask for Dan Demshar ... who is the son of the owner .... I’ve been dealing with him for 30 years. Phone (330) 678-1297 ... 1645 E. Main St., Kent, OH 45240 .... I used to work in the next town east of their shop. I am a retired Aeronautical Engineer ... and moved to the SW ... 2,000 miles away .... but I still go to Dan for my camera needs.
