It never meant you get a free ride.

If a out of state vendor did not add your State’s sales tax to the purchase, by law you were still required to pay a “Useage” tax on any purchase where the sales tax was not collected. Maryland levied such a tax on me several years ago for a mail order purchase I made in Canada. Evidently, when the item passed through customs, cost information was passed on to the Comptrollers office in MD. It did t take them long to find me.

Many states for years asked if you bought anything mailorder out of state on the tax form and then told you to pay the tax. Obviously no one admitted to this and thus the current law.

Uniform taxes is the only way local stores can compete. If you live in an area like I do where you would need to drive 2 hours to find a real camera store you would not complain. Not just camera stores but almost all specialty stores suffer because people buy on line to save taxes.

Trump believes in tax avoidance.
Let others pay for schools, roads, FEMA, military, public works, clean water and air, police and fire protection , social security, Medicare, and all those other strange entitlements.

It is per State. Federal Law now allows Sales Tax on mail order. It is between B&H and the State of NY. I just bought a Fujifilm camera from B&H and paid no Sales Tax for California were I am. But in the future CA may ask B&H to collect Sales Tax.

Sure, the money goes to the state to use "wisely," but I'd prefer to make my own wise decisions.

If they reduced or eliminated sales tax, would you make the wise decision to pay to have that pothole repaired down at the end of the street? I think not.

Show them.
Maddow slut showed them and guess what they paid all their taxes.
She looked like the slut she really is and everyone was laughing at her for weeks at how stupid she was.

We actually watch carefully our road and whenever it is dug up hound them until it is fixed. PS brick road, over 100 years old has never had a pothole. Only damage is when it is dug up.

That is true; and while many have avoided these taxes for years, all should understand the responsibility to pay taxes now.

Does the sales tax vary from state to state in the USA? Here in the UK we have to pay 20% VAT (Value Added Tax) whether we live in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.

Now it will boil down to 1) Selection, 2) Service, and 3) Knowledge about the product.

Sadly local stores will have a tough time competing on #1. #2 is so personnel dependent it is hard to make any blanket statement. #3 will also vary highly, but having spent hours at B&H during rare trips to NYC it is hard to beat the knowledge of the men behind the counter.

I like to consider that even if I do pay a tax for an online purchase, I still enjoy a savings over buying from a brick-and-mortar retail store.

After all, I can order using my computer online without getting ready to go out, driving to a store (when open), parking, having limited selection, fending with sales talk, and driving back home. Physical movement to and from the retail store involves a transportation expense, too.

My time, expense, and effort have value in purchase of photography items.

Online, a buyer can consult multiple sources of information for gear and software. In store, a buyer becomes subject to sales blather subtly favoring the seller.

Despite taxation imposed on buying items online, the pros and cons here weight toward buying online.
