This a is a good shot... but.... a great example in favor of focus on center hold half down and turn to see what the beast is looking at... The story is not behind him rather in front of him.

While I am suggesting do we need so much upper part of the photo? As abc1234 suggested, crop.

And remove those two background and one foreground objects if not cropped out.

My husband informed me that this one is the designated watchdog for the group, so they can forage in relative safety.

No, leave them in mostly. Crop just above the object on the far right and perhaps split the dark part. The rock at the bottom left adds little if any to the story... Your main subject is well done and the focus of attention.
