My 9 year old granddaughter loves photography. Any suggestions on the purchase of her first camera? It needs to be sturdy and probably a point and shoot b

Let her borrow your camera and see how she does.

I use Sony mirrorless full frame. I have gone out shooting with her many times and she uses one of my cameras. I want to nurture her passion and enthusiasm

Since you already have the Sony system, you might consider a Sony A6000. Good camera, sharp images, and won't break the bank. It is a nice size for travel or younger shooters.

If she’s been shooting with your Sony, get her a bridge camera that has a viewfinder. Also make sure it has M, Av, and Tv modes so she can learn manual control when she’s ready to take control and get creative.

I am think more point and shoot since at 9 she needs a more rugged camera than the A6000. Was thinking of the Olympus tough series. Any thoughts

I would suggest the Fuji Finepix XP130 - available in several bright colors - about $200.

I didn't realize the A6000 was not pretty rugged. I have banged mine around on a motorcycle for 3 or 4 years now with no ill effects that I can see. A new one from Amazon with the 15-50 lens is 548.00 so it is in your desired price range.

I think that this is a good plan. Since you let her use your full-frame Sony she will be able to handle an A6000. Kids are able to handle things with care and definitely can grow into this kind of responsibility. You can share lenses on outings together, and she will be learning from you as you use the same system.

You and your camera....her interest may be in you rather than the camera per sec. Spending time with Grandad, doing something interesting as well as chatting and not being told to shut up may be her prime reason. Parenting is good - grandparenting is better!
