So I put my gear in the car this morning and went out to catch Fall colors in the early morning light. Took some great shots of a small river with a gravel bar and some mist rising up in the morning light. A few minutes later I stopped at a lake with a thin fog over it and got some great shots of that. At least they should have been. A bit later at a stop I took time to review my images and it said there were none!! Horrors!!! I looked in and discovered I'd forgotten to put my SD card back in after downloading some other images to the computer and left it on my desk. What a disappointment. After that it was late enough that the light was getting pretty harsh, but I got some shots of Denali. Rats!
Set your camera up so it won't release without a card in the future. Many cameras have that menu option. Good luck.

About 1 month ago, I was sitting on the back deck, overlooking Los Angeles, when I hear a strange sounding helicopter, we're right on the approach pattern for 2 major hospitals, so loud aircraft are the norm . Looking east, I see 2 USMC VH-22 Ospreys flying in Helicopter mode. Running inside, I grab my Fuji, fly out to the deck and start shooting. Got them right as they passed over the house. Then discovered that the SD card was in the reader on my Desktop from downloading earlier.
I feel your pain.
You are not alone in doing this - last time I went out to shoot, when I reached my destination, I discovered that there was no memory card in the camera. However, I was fortunate in that I had a new one, still in its original packing, tucked in the camera bag.

Sorry to hear that Greg, you are not alone I did that too, just think tomorrow is another day, I am sure you will not forget it again.
I have to wonder why cameras even have the option to shoot without a card.

Turn OFF “Shoot Without Card”.

It’s for USB tethering of camera to computer... your images go to the hard drive.
Canon got it right. With EOS Utility, you can save to card AND computer if you choose.
Got a good tip from one of the popular authors: Leave the mem card door open after you remove a card from a camera body. Do not close it until you replace the card.
When I remove a card from a camera, the first thing I do is replace it and format the replacement. That gives me time to download and back up the files before I use the card again.
I started doing that years ago after doing exactly what you did today. I always remember doing it, but no longer remember what shots I missed, so nothing lost.

As you can see, you are not alone. A couple of years ago I went to my granddaughters high school graduation and took quite a few photos, at least I thought. When I got home I found that I had left my SD card in the computer. How sick I am to this day and you can bet I'll never forget to check for the card in the future.
I have six CF cards and three batteries, camera is always loaded and ready. Experience is the best teacher, I learned the hard way also.
I once got a rare chance to cruise for a day on an aircraft carrier on the Delaware River. I cruised all day, happily shooting below decks, above decks, from the flight deck, you name it. I couldn't have been happier. Then I realized that I'd been doing a lot of shooting without changing film. You guessed it: I didn't have film in the camera. I ended up with ZERO images.
