Linda Thanks for posting these, they are so intriguing on several levels. Beauty, arcane, unknown things revealed. and the last a good start for a score for an abstract marimbist. Thanks so much they captivated me. RBorud.
I am so grateful for your lovely comments, rborud. It's highly gratifying to hear!

That's unbelievable! Who thought of that?
LOL, I don't know, but probably Google does. When I photographed this harvest in Sept 2016, a farm manager happened to be nearby and saw me taking pics. He said the machine, which automatically cuts the twine at top of each hops "row" (brain cramp, what is a vertical row??), had only been invented about 10 years previously. Before that, the workers were on a platform, armed with machetes.

Linda, I am getting to think this is your favorite location, for taking photos. You always submit an interesting take on these fields

All great. Love #1. For some reason it reminds me of photos taken back in the fifties, go figure.

Thank you very much! #1 was shot several years ago, the first week I was taking an online Fine Arts B&W class. It turned out to be my best, all went downhill from there

The poles, trellis wires and twine used to grow hops crops. Yakima County produces 75% of the nation's supply, so there are many photo ops

Thanks for viewing!

Excellent images Linda - each in its own way. #1 is superb. Love the pattern of the verticals and intersecting horizontals. #3 is fascinating for the multiple perspective lines radiating out from the viewpoint. #4 is a wonderful piece of graphic art.

Well done.

South East England is another major hop producing area with iconic cone topped hop or 'Oast' houses for drying the hops. Anything similar in Yakima County?

I had not heard the term, did Google Image search and how cool are those oasts?! Far more photogenic than the flat kilns like shown in this pic of a Yakima area facility:

Thank you for your detailed feedback, Phil. I'm so glad you enjoyed the series!

Linda they are all very captivating. Each one is individually creative and unique although the same basic subject. I love the impression of an almost stark moody tone of the first one even though you give as a lot of detail. A great way to capture all of that detail without it appearing too busy.

Number 4 makes me think of my beginner piano books when I was a child. Brightly colored notes to capture the imagination and inspire creativity. Great job on all of them.

Thank you for your time, Keni! I reached out to you because I figured you were about the only person on UHH who has never seen any of my hops "growing apparatus" photos, lol, and I was curious about your impression of these as photo subjects.

#4 was a combo of two effects in my befunky.com online app, from a b&w original. Sure wish I'd written down how I achieved the result

Again, many thanks.

I never would have thought this would be good subject matter much less all the different treatments. I am still grappling with the mechanics and I think some creativity gets lost in that process. I am looking forward to the mechanics being more second nature so I donโ€™t pass by these opportunities you see. I was driving around the backroads yesterday evening looking for photo ops and feeling frustrated but this opens my eyes to a different way of viewing things. Maybe I should have stopped at that old abandoned industrial building in the middle of a horse pasture.

I think the last shot should be named Sing A Song of Six Pence.

I never would have thought this would be good subj... (show quote)
I wish I could remember how I learned exposure and the properties of dof, shutter speed et al. I know my b&w film class instructor would always preach, "Watch the edges of your frame!" That kept me carefully composing for many years (now I'm lazy). And I can't recall how I learned to see beyond the documentary. It could very well have been with the b&w class also, because of the emphasis on shapes, textures, shadows and light. And I was in a great club at the same time (around 1990, Arlington VA) that had monthly competitions.

Four and twenty blackbirds??
