The better camera is the D7100 but your question should be, is that what I need? I have heard many enthusiastic comments from owners of the D5600, seems to me it is a very capable entry camera.
If you do not need all of the bells and whistles the D7100 has and depending on how advanced you are as a photographer the D5600 should not disappoint.

I've said the same thing when others asked the same question. I have a D5600; my best friend has the D7200. Yes, the D7200 has all the additional features MT Shooter mentions but the D5600 has the exact same sensor plus a touch screen and it is smaller, weighing considerably less than the D7200. My friend lamented he wished he had my D5600 after lugging around his D7200 hiking all day at 12,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies. IF you need all the bells and whistles, get the D7200. If you don't, then get a feel for each, see which seems more to your liking and spend some money on a good lens.

I’ve had a D7100 for 3 years and have no desire to upgrade . Look at KEH photography you can get an excellent plus with a warranty or extended warranty if you choose .

If you enjoy shooting manuel the duel wheels on the D7100/D7200 are a must. Look into refurbs at https://www.cameracottage.com/ they give a year warenty.

D7200, much bigger buffer, plus everything else mentioned

D7100. Because it's better.

Cameta Camera has some used Nikon D7100 cameras, and B&H has new ones. I have purchased equipment from both of these stores, and never had a problem with either one. I can highly recommend either one. Depending on your budget, the used D7100's at Cameta are roughly half the price of the new ones at B&H.

D7100. Weather sealing, penta prism finder, dual memory card slots, many more focus points, much more robust build, mechanical AF drive motor, external selectors for adjustments. And its replacement, the D7200, adds WiFi and a much bigger buffer.

What he said!

I had the d5500 and upgraded to the d7200. Did not consider the d7100 mostly because of the buffer.

Several reasons I upgraded are
Weather sealed
Dual card slot
Built in remote flash trigger (you can buy a Nikon remote flash trigger for the 5600 for close to $300)
Ease of changing settings without going into menu

I would choose a 7200. It has a focus motor and is compatible with more lenses.

If size and weight are important - the 5600.

One point I haven't seen anyone mention is the size and weight. I went for the D5600 because it is smaller, lighter and just fit in my hand more comfortably. I wanted a camera I could carry around without stressing my body. With the 18-140 lens it does everything I need as an amateur photographer. My suggestion is to go somewhere that you can hold them and get the feel for what works for you. Good luck on your search and decision.

Do not buy the D7100. Its tiny little buffer will drive you crazy. I cursed mine and finally bought a D7500. It put the joy back in my photography.

I too much prefer the D5xxxs over the D7xxxs because of the fully articulated screen and more elegant control approach using the active info screen (inactive for D7xxx up to 7200, fixed on 7500). The randomly placed unlighted buttons and unreadable green screen on my D7000 drove me nuts. I dumped it for a D5300, and now love my D5600.

The touch screen took the already elegant control scheme to new level. You need to go to a D7500 to get that.

(I put up with the crappy control system on my D800 when I want the better image quality. It is going to morph into an 850 when refurbs become available. The control system like the D7500 should work for me. And tilt screen.)

Why not the 7200? For the same reasons as the 7100 plus added capabilities. You may also fine that you’ll have a wider range of lenses from which to choose. Lastly, the 7200 will give you more room to grow.

There are no Nikon lenses the D7200 can use that the D7100 can't. Possibly thinking about AF-P lenses. Fine on my D7100.
