D7100. Weather sealing, penta prism finder, dual memory card slots, many more focus points, much more robust build, mechanical AF drive motor, external selectors for adjustments. And its replacement, the D7200, adds WiFi and a much bigger buffer.

I don't think you can buy an new Nikon D7100 any more but the D5600 is available new so how do we compare price?

All good points, but even bigger is the built in AF motor allowing the use of the fantastic lineup of NIKKOR AF legacy glass, plus the meter hookups allowing the use of non AF but AI and AIS lenses.

Tha 7000 series adds the ability to control one or several off-camera flash units from the pop-up flash in either automatic mode or manual.

MTShooter, I always value your opinion(s), what about picture quality and low light performance? Does one stand taller than the other?

Same sensor, same image, with all else being equal anyway. The lens used will make more difference than the body.

I am watching this with great interest. I went to this site:

and it came to a basic "draw". I shoot wildlife and often have to shoot at higher ISO. My question is: While the D7100 has ISO range to 6400, it says that it is "expandable" to 25600. What does "expandable" mean, and how does it work. Shot by shot or in burst etc? Any help would be appreciated.

The expandable ISO range is noisier, similar to how 1600/3200 ISO film was grainier.

That will be the same on both bodies.

If you shoot wildlife you shoot in the weather and if your shoot in the weather a weather sealed body is a godsend.

The better camera is the D7100 but your question should be, is that what I need? I have heard many enthusiastic comments from owners of the D5600, seems to me it is a very capable entry camera.
If you do not need all of the bells and whistles the D7100 has and depending on how advanced you are as a photographer the D5600 should not disappoint.

Um yes you can a quick Google search would reveal that.

I shoot a D7100 and have not been disappointed in my 2 years shooting with it.

I think you might be onto something here.

Why not the 7200? For the same reasons as the 7100 plus added capabilities. You may also fine that you’ll have a wider range of lenses from which to choose. Lastly, the 7200 will give you more room to grow.
