I suggest check out Photodex's program ProShow Gold (for starter) and the more advanced, ProShow Producer. They have all the things you want and some. You can make copies in different format such as regular DVD, Blu ray, and USB flash drive. You can also directly upload to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. I suggest instead of making copy in regular DVD, use Blu ray format. The difference in image quality is like night and day. You will need a Blu ray recorder to burn it, though. I also notice that the USB flash drive image quality is noticeably better than the regular DVD. You can also use your own music or ones that come with the software for your slideshow. You can also adjust the timing of the music for more dramatic effect. Here are couple samples of slideshow I created using ProShow Producer:

I agree I utilize ProShow Producer very easy to use. Does what you want.

Take care.

I use ProShow Pro. The gold version will do what you want also. Excellent and easy to learn. Less than $100.

To me, I am amazed that Photoshop and other doAll programs are suggested. Better to use a specialized program who's soul purpose in life it to do Slide-Shows. Check out Ashampoo.

"Ashampoo have released Ashampoo Slideshow Studio HD 4 for Windows. New features and enhancements include several new transition effects; support for Apple, Android, Sony and Microsoft devices; and new output formats including MKV, VP9 and MP4. A new wizard helps beginners create slideshows with ease. Other additions include faster encoding with NVENC and Intel Media support, as well as support for 4K resolutions. The program is available now for $39.99."
Try a trial copy:

ProShow Producer is expensive but it will do everything you could possibly want to do with a slide show.

I use Photo Show Gold and it does all that you ask. Adobe has a new product called Spark and I have tried the online simple version and it shows promise. Good luck!

Pinnacle Studio 21 has an extremely easy to use create and edit set of tools. Like any software program, there is a little learning curve but it is easy to master.

I've used PowerPoint on numerous occasions. It does all of the aforementioned techniques plus will produce a file that can be run without PowerPoint software being on the device. Sound and timing can be added easily.
Since it comes with MS Office it's software already on hand.

Does anyone know what process or software is used to make a photo slide show where there is a pan or slow zoom in or out or and then a fade to the next photo. I see it a lot in photo journalism type documentary stuff. Ken Burns also used it often in his civil war and Vietnam documentaries. A bunch of still photos get movement as they fade to the next. Also can narration or music be in the background and can this creation be saved to a DVD of flash drive to use in a presentation or is it only doable within the software?
Thanks to all who respond.

I use Microsoft Powerpoint to do all that because I do regular presentations to cactus & succulent societies throughout Southern California. Powerpoint also can turn your slide show into an mp4, as I have done here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GCK1XmgwoM&t=3s
That one has no audio associated with it, but it's the first one I did where I also inserted a video and made it play automatically. So there's video within video.
This one has audio that I inserted:

My first version used the actual music and was shut down by YouTube, so I used Audacity to change the tempo, key, and pace, which passed muster.

Use a Mac with iMovie (free with every Mac) or Final Cut Pro X ($300). The Ken Burns Effect is in both... it is part of the crop tool.

Actually, either one will do everything you listed. Burns uses Final Cut Pro X.

Both FCP and iMovie give you lots of effects options. And both are video editing programs with lots of audio flexibility. I use both.

I've often used MS Powerpoint. It's relatively easy to use and you can make it as simply or complex as you like. Tons of online tutorials available too.

I've seen "Ken Burns Effect" listed as an option on several software programs. That effect has been around since before Ken was born, so I'm surprised that it has his name.

I like to see them ban "Free Download" from web sites. Download for free, and then pay to use.
