Does anyone know what process or software is used to make a photo slide show where there is a pan or slow zoom in or out or and then a fade to the next photo. I see it a lot in photo journalism type documentary stuff. Ken Burns also used it often in his civil war and Vietnam documentaries. A bunch of still photos get movement as they fade to the next. Also can narration or music be in the background and can this creation be saved to a DVD of flash drive to use in a presentation or is it only doable within the software?
Thanks to all who respond.

Power point can do that type of transition, although I’ve never tried to add music

I've used ProShow Gold. Great program. There's a fancier version called ProShow Producer but I've never used it.

You can buy Photostage by NCH (on sale for 34.99 before end of June). I use it to present my slide show of bird pics. You drag and drop photos, and music, add various swipes, fades, etc. It creates an avi file that then you can burn a dvd and play anywhere.

Video editors can do that. I just started using 'Shotcut' and 'Openshot' which are free and have good tutorials.

Premiere Elements does it very nicely! It will read your RAW edits from Lightroom, it has lots of soundtrack options and will output versions for YouTube, Facebook or even the current 4K TVs.

Isn't the "Ken Burns Style" an option on most, if not aĺl, slideshow programs?

PowerPoint works well because you can advance the slides manually if you are talking over them, etc. or set to run automatically, which is trickier if you try to talk in between the slides. Music, movement and transitions can be added. Better to put finished product on flash drive vs DVD in case you want to edit or update a presentation later, plus DVD is a dying breed.

If manual is not needed, almost any quality video software can do this. I use PowerDirector latest version 16 but previous versions can be had cheaper. You can do everything you mentioned with drag & drop or spend a lifetime getting good at it. Kind of like starting in Auto mode on your camera until you learn all the features. Outputs to DVD or various video formats.

Probably is...

I think the issue is to establish where slideshow programs and video editing programs differ. I lean toward the video editor believing there are more options. Adobe Premiere Elements and ProShow Gold are within a few bucks on price. So cost is not the issue.

I suggest check out Photodex's program ProShow Gold (for starter) and the more advanced, ProShow Producer. They have all the things you want and some. You can make copies in different format such as regular DVD, Blu ray, and USB flash drive. You can also directly upload to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. I suggest instead of making copy in regular DVD, use Blu ray format. The difference in image quality is like night and day. You will need a Blu ray recorder to burn it, though. I also notice that the USB flash drive image quality is noticeably better than the regular DVD. You can also use your own music or ones that come with the software for your slideshow. You can also adjust the timing of the music for more dramatic effect. Here are couple samples of slideshow I created using ProShow Producer:

Take care.
