Re the Leitzes of the forum, the first thing I do when I encounter such nonsense is to check their history and yep, usually they're nasty to everyone. Can you imagine how miserable their real lives must be?

I add them to my ignore list. I'm hoping for an update someday to UHH so I don't have to see any of their comments.

But those are a very useful part of the body.

Years ago I lost a film camera because I left the battery in it. Now, I will take the battery out if I know it is going to sit for longer than a week. Several years ago, I found a leaking battery in my flash attachment so I'm pretty sure to check. Don't need to loose a valuable piece of equipment any more.

Remove the battery would cause the built in battery to be depleted. And if that battery goes bad it's much more difficult to replace.

Sounds like someone's mommy took his binky away.

Well, after 81 years I've learned to ignore those that don't have anything to say. I didn't say it but I'm referring to the Nikon batteries in the camera. I've read the manual and as someone said, lots of things are recommendations so sometime I follow other times I do what I've learned works better for me.

Excellent! We now know why you asked.

Yesterday the thread was about recharging dead Li Batteries may be useful. Li batteries are quite stable, while I say yes remove the batteries... that does not mean that I do. I never plan on not using my camera... it just happens. Now! with Alkaline batteries and NiCad... or progress forbid old "heavy duty" batteries... Danger Lurks !! those evil ones will come out of their shell and make a mess! This has primarily happened to my flash units.

Removing the battery from Cameras for extended periods causes Camera Amnesia... they forget the time and date ... oh, well, at times I do too.

The best dead battery resurrection answer [IMO] is by TRIX on page one... http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-535031-1.html

Remember that the camera also has an internal battery to keep the camera's memory going. This battery is not accessible by the user and is kept charged by the main battery, so if you remove the main battery eventually the internal battery will go dead so your camera will forget all of your settings.

Ouch!

This was supposed to be a comment on the “read the manual” remark. Maybe Don Rickles was reincarnated.

My cameras don't get out often enough. I check the batteries every couple of weeks.
If I KNOW it will be months, I remove them.

That seems to sum it up. Modern camera batteries aren't like AA cells. Leakage doesn't seem to be a problem. Still, you don't want to leave one in the camera for more than a month.

On the other hand, what about many new cameras that charge their batteries in the camera? Those batteries could spend their entire lives inside the camera. Of course, if they're being used and charged, they're unlikely to leak. I wonder about the contacts developing a coating of corrosion, though.

I am fortunate to have a D500 for my prime camera. As a backup I kept the D7200. When the D7200 is on the shelf, should I remove the battery or does it matter.

Leith, Why the hell are you even on here!!!
