Forgot to mention the scavi tour which takes you under the alter into the papal graves. If you do take that one I suggest you read a new book by John ONeill called The Fishermans Tomb. It will give you a whole new perspective on stuff down there. Worth the read anyway if just for the history and piloitcal intrigue

As an amateur photographer I have to say that I am appalled at people’s disregard for the unprofessionalism I am seeing and reading. Forget the fact that the Sistene Chapel is a sacred, religious, and historical place. These paintings and frescoes are hundreds of years old and have been painstakingly restored, undertaken years of restoration at a staggering cost of millions and millions of dollars for the world to enjoy. As photographers we are supposed to hold ourselves to a high standard of decorum and what I read here is that it is OK for some people to disregard the wishes of those who ask us not to photograph in the chapel. Stop being the ugly Americans.
We are better than that!

A valid point, but when we were there, there were signs saying silence in multiple languages. That didn't stop people talking and the overwhelming majority of the conversations were in Italian. It wasn't "ugly Americans" that were the problem or being disrespectful, or elsewhere in Rome, Florence, and so on. By way of disclosure, I'm a Brit, although I live in the US, so I have no real reason to defend Americans. Also, there are uglier Brits in terms of behavior and lack of respect.

Yes, read the rules. My post is for someone who might offer some first hand knowledge in addition to the text. Thanks

Does anyone know of limitations on photo equipment that can be taken into the Vatican, the Cathedral, and ancillary buildings? Recent experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Buy a right angle viewer for the camera. It will make shooting pictures of the Sistine Chapel ceiling a lot easier.

All the comments are appreciated. I will offer a caveat. Be EXTREMELY CAUTOUS in crowded areas in Rome. In a tight situation helping my granddaughter today on a crowded subway train, someone lifted my 24-105, f4L ISM right off the body. I found out as I exited the train car. The stories of thieves in Rome, believe them! They are always looking for a chance to take from someone else. What a Father’s Day present!

Very sorry to hear that. It does happen, and being stolen from sucks. At least nobody got injured.

Thanks. I did find a photo shop and picked up a used 24-105 f3.5-5.6 to use for the balance of my trip. I’ll see how good this substitute lense works out.
Replacement once I am back in the states.

Which is why I travel with a Pacsafe armored backpack, and never ever carry cameras slung over my shoulder.
