Does anyone know of limitations on photo equipment that can be taken into the Vatican, the Cathedral, and ancillary buildings? Recent experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Flash may be a problem, a wide angle lens may be useful, as well as a telephoto, and discretion a virtue. Not recent images, and poor quality scans, but good luck!

Veni, Vidi, Video!

Our trip was about 5 yrs. back and I had my backpack with a DSLR and the 24-105 and 70-200 with me. No issues then toting them. I wish I had a wider lens with me for the Sistine Chapel etc.

We visited last year and could take photos everywhere,
except Sistine Chapel. Guards there to keep you from taking photos.

Normally no flash is permitted inside the Vatican and absolutely no camera shots inside the Sistine Chapel. Camera bags are not normally an issue. Due to the fragility of the Frescoes and paintings need I say more. The chapel was restored some ten to fifteen years ago. Our most recent visit was September 2017.

The Vatican, like most museums, churches, etc across Europe, does not allow flash photography nor do they permit monopods or tripods. Some even forbid photos in certain locales within a locale. Fortunately, if you have your agenda, you can go online and check out what is and not allowed. Outside photos do not have any restrictions.

Cameras are expected but not flash inside. I learned the hard way that a tripod isn't allowed in St. Peter's square, even outside. But that got me a very interesting trip behind the walls by one of the Swiss guards to a bureaucratic office inside Vatican City so it was totally worth it!!!!

No photos, including cell phone photos allowed in the Sistine Chapel and they definitely watch you, all others, yes you can take photos....I took pictures in the Chapel in the 80's but they restrict it now.

No tripods, no flash are the most common. I think they also banned selfie sticks, which is a good thing.

We have been there several times over the years & the last time, I was shooting a Nikon D300s (cropped) & a Nikkor 17-55/f2.8. Worked fine — wide enough & sufficient reach. Going again this fall; now using FF & haven’t decided about lens...

Yes, can not photo in the Sistine Chapel but everyone does. I took a 'discrete' shot of it and have a beautifully centered photo of the Creation of Adam. Do take a wide angle. Be sure and see the tapestry collection-pay attention to the cat under the table ;) Take a wide angle for sure and a telephoto is useful for stuff in the upper ceiling. The orange dove makes a beautiful closeup. The letters on the wall up there are six feet tall! Also if time permits climb to the top of St Peters the view is worth the trek. True on the tripod rule-they are insistent about that. I am assuming you are a guy-do not wear shorts even the nice bermuda ones will get you tossed in a heartbeat. Women must wear a skirt-I kept a pull on in my backpack. If you are an early riser and have the $$$ there is a tour led by the guy whose job it is to open all the doors called the clave tour. Fast moving but get to see some parts not on the official route. Smart is the person who books that on the papal audience days-wed and sat I believe but don't quote me. Gets you in ahead of the throngs and a front row stand.
