I just say "thank you". They're usually impressed more by the lens even though they said camera. Unless they want to engage in a discussion, anything other than thank you just seems snaky to me to something that was likely given as a compliment.

Same respond as someone say you have a nice watch, a nice car etc..

Generally I will respond with a simple "thank you".
However, in some neighborhoods, a compliment by a stranger often means he/she wants something from you... perhaps even the camera.

I have a couple of cameras. A Canon EOS 600D fitted with an 18 - 270 lens, that I use when I go somewhere where I don't know what I'll be shooting. And, a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk3, usually fitted with a 24 -105mm L series or other lenses if I know in advance what to expect. Either way, in these days when everyone uses a phone to take pictures and anyone under the age of about 25 doesn't know what a viewfinder is, I often get total strangers come up to me and say "That's a nice camera". I'm tempted to reply "Oh, is it? thank you, I was worried I may have wasted a lot of money". I wondered how everyone else responds to this.

Maybe, "Thanks for letting me know" So far I had not to worry about that, because that has never happened to me yet!

I don't recall I've ever been asked, so have never had to grapple with such a difficult answer!!!

It is and that's what I normally say. But, it seems a strange remark that does seem to need a response.

I think people are just trying to be friendly and nice. Some might be happy to see a photographer with a camera, not just millennials with cell phones. Who knows?

LOL

I was at Yellowstone a couple years ago. Lots of photographers were lined up shooting a now deceased white wolf. It was a long ways away. A nice lady with a $20K+ Nikon set up was next to me.

I said, "That's a nice camera!"

She had a boyfriend that hauled her gear from a Suburban with a custom back deck for holding cameras and lenses. She felt sorry for me with my little gear and offered me a look through her viewfinder. I accepted and felt that her stills might need some cropping. Mine was on video record and I offered her a return look. The best shot might have come with a P&S over her expression when she saw my viewfinder had more wolf than her viewfinder.

Since I don't have a Canon or Nikon, nobody ever says anything nice about my cameras.

Then I would have to say you have an exceptional camera. 😈😈😈

Try setting up a 4x5 in a national park to photograph something. The funniest thing I have experienced was on the patio of the El Tovar Lodge at The Grand Canyon. I put the tripod in place, pulled out the 4x5 and was placing it on the tripod when I heard, "Stand back folks. Give him room. He knows what he's doing". That was from another guest at the lodge. I had everything I could do to keep from laughing uncontrollably.

I do courteously thank people who compliment my camera equipment, then go on about taking the photograph.

You could've said "I'm just the roadie, the photographer doesn't show up until the mood strikes." 😈😈😈

Based on actual results that end up as wall hanging travel keepers, the cameras are a Sony RX100 (version 1) and a Panasonic LX100. They look like toys for amateurs and get no attention at all.

Repaying a compliment with an insult won't win you many friends, but maybe that's your goal.
