My Wife and I are going to Iceland and Greenland in September. I've been searching Youtube for videos on Greenland and Iceland and found dozens with very useful information. Hope you have a great trip.

On that same note, your credit card has to have a chip in it. Also they use a different chip so call your credit card company and find out if your card will work. It may have changed but 3 years ago we needed new cards to do the trip.

If you see a sign with a pick nick table and a tree pull over it’s a great photo. You have so many photo opportunities. Go to Vic for the black sand beaches. Plenty of waterfalls to see, horses, churches, landscapes etc. the people are great.

We were there in February. Despite cold, rain, snow and clouds, we loved it. We did get to see the Northern Lights but it’s light 24 hours a day in the summer so you won’t have that opportunity.

There are too many amazing things to see to cover here. We booked a self driving tour through Guide to Iceland and, even if you’re not using them, you could look at the many driving itineraries on their site, guidetoiceland.is. They list pretty much everything you’d want to see.

You really won’t need cash. Credit and debit cards are commonly used for everything, even just a cup of coffee or candy bar at a gas station. And, as someone else said, at the unmanned gas stations in remote areas you must have a pin enabled credit or debit card. Tipping is customary but not to the same degree as in the states and, if you have no Icelandic cash, they’ll happily accept U.S. for a tip.

Food is expensive, about twice what you’d pay in the states. Our hotels included breakfast and we usually just picked up lunch on the road. Gas stations, especially Oli’s, have all kinds of good hot and cold sandwiches and are not horribly expensive. Expect to spend $40 to $50 per person for an average dinner without drinks.

We found the people to be very friendly and just about everyone speaks fluent English.

As far as photography goes, I travelled with a 16-35 and a 70-200 on a full frame camera. I shot mostly landscapes and rarely used the longer lens. You can look through my posts and see some of the shots I took.

Spent 12 days last September. Takeaways-- Used no cash-everything is debit card-has a Schwab bank card-no fees and same day exchange rate. Used Booking.com and made arrangements at Guesthouses-do not have to pay in advance with Booking. Rented car from "Sad Cars"-cheapest, had no issues but make sure you have decent tires. Fuel is $2 per liter-"Filier" means fill up on the pump. Take toilet paper-minimal places to use bathroom-do no leave the toilet paper though. Got food at grocery store for use at Guest houses-food very expensive. Got cereal for breakfast and sandwiches and chips for lunch on road. Can get burgers and hotdogs at filling stations-cheapest way to go.I put photography equipment in a small soft collapsible ice chest for flight that will fit in overhead bins and then use the chest on the trip. Most houses have community kitchens and bathrooms. No problem with language except "Older" citizens. Got online and found 10-12 day tour and basically followed their lead. We love waterfalls so got lots of photos-don't miss Hraunfossar- very unusual. Used National Geographic map from Amazon-very good. Friend got Iceland sim card for phone with data. Google maps worked great in finding Guesthouses. Got Iceland map for our Garmin- worked good on roads-not good on address finding. All guesthouses had wifi but check if so. Also lots of unique "country" churches and cemeteries. Don't miss Glacial Lagoon and the Diamond beach at sunrise. Overall, great trip, great people and would go back in a minute. No issues at all.
