go to Harlem. Do something interesting besides all the typical tourist spots. 125th street. As safe as Fifth avenue.

There are some photo venues the people don't usually think of when the think of the City. Beaches. Some classic beach opportunities. Coney Island. The Rockaways, South Beach( along Father Capodomo Blvd) in Staten Island. In september the beaches will be almost empty. Often referred to as the outer boroughs, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, offer unlimited opportunities, that will surprise every one that they were made in NY City. Plus if you go to Staten Island you can take the Staten Island Ferry- great shots of downtown and the harbor. South Beach is basically 3 miles of deserted beach, an unused jewel in the city.

Some of the best views of the skyline are actually from Jersey. Try Hamilton Park on Boulevard East in Weehawken, NJ which provides views from the GW Bridge to the Verrazano Bridge especially around 5-6pm in late September when the sun still shines but the skyline is lite up from office workers still at work. The view is directly across mid town Manhattan. It is also historically significant as this is where Hamilton and Burr had there famous duel that ended Hamilton's life.

Central Park, MOMA, Natural Museum of History, The Bronx Zoo, The Botanical Gardens (in the Bronx), China Town, Little Italy, The Empire State Building, Times Square, The Brooklyn Bridge, Ride the Ferry to Staten Island and back (goes fairly close to the Statute of Liberty). You won't run out of things to do. Go ahead and get theatre tickets to a show you want to see (it isn't too early). You'll love it. I go once or twice a year.

Advance ticket for Statue of Liberty is good idea. Bad idea for Empire State building, Top of the Rock where cloudy conditions would burr out a good view. Circle Line cruises and Double decker buses are great to see more with less time. Lot of churches if you are into them.

Battery Park is nice. Take a sunset cruise of the Hudson River--if you're lucky you'll get the Sun setting behind the Statue of Liberty:

Bryant Park is a nice little place to rest.

Everywhere! NYC is a photographers heaven. Just walk Lexington or Ave of the Americas then do cross town starting in the village.

Just open your eyes!

Hi All
I'm doing a 10 day trip to New York City in September and looking for some tips - where to go shoot. Is it better to get advanced passes (tickets) to the regular sites - Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc. ?
Any suggestions on teaming up with a professional photographer that does group walk-around. I want to do some street photography - night photography.

James Maher comes to mind - has anyone joined his groups?

Don't forget the Boroughs and the neighborhoods off the beaten path. Brooklyn; Grand Army Plaza, The Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park, The Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Williamsburg, Flatbush- dozens of ethnic and cultural neighborhoods, Fort Hamilton, The Varrazano-Narrows Bridge. The Bronx; Yankee Stadium, New York Zoological Park (The Bronx Zoo), Queens: Flushing Meadows, The Museum of the Moving Image (Astoria Studios) and JFK International Airport. Staten Island via the Ferry. Great architecture- (Manhattan) The Guggenheim Museum, Trinity Church, The Chrysler Building (Art Decco) and the interior of Radio City Music Hall. The Lower East Side of Manhattan and "Alphabet City".

These are suggested because there are interesting photographic opportunities.

Can't add much to "all of the above", except to note on our first trip to NYC we took the hop-on hop-off tour on the very first day to get the overall layout.
If you can sit on the open air top level, you will have many photo ops from that viewpoint.
We did not get off the bus on that day, but mapped out the areas we wanted to see on following days.
On our second trip, we focused on things we did not see on the first trip.

I do think that buying some of the package deals are worth it. Lots of decisions though.

Have a great time !!

If you have 10 days, the boat tour up the Hudson River to West Point will give you great shots going up river. Then take the Staten Island Ferry round trip. Then China Town, Little Italy, Washington Square and do go up the Empire State Building - you can take great shots from there. The main advice is: don't be in a hurry and have fun!

As a frequent visitor to New York City, I can say with certainty that getting tickets in advance will make your experience multiple times better. Recently my teenage granddaughter and I visited the Empire State Building with pre-purchased VIP passes (it costs a few bucks). It was worth every penny. Same thing is true on the top of 30 Rock. By the way, you can get better shots of Central Park from 30 Rock than the ESB.
