Thank you. The doctors know how control the cancer. I'll be around taking hummer photo for a long time. I sneak up on these photos, improving it a little bit each time. It's a learning experience.

I have a 600mm f/4 lens that I wanted test for depth of field and quick auto-focus. I think it's going to work out well. It's raining and my flashes are not yet set up. I know I can do much better, I'm just getting started and it has been a few years since I took a hummingbird photo. I'm back!

My first hummer this year:

Very nice, Dave!!

I'm still inching up on the photo I have in my mind. I have now proved to myself that I was able to get a little more depth of fiend by using a longer lens and moving the camera further from the subject. Both wings are within hyper-focus. This is what I was after.

Next I need to add another flash or two to get better lighting. I'm also going to need a little cooperation from the bird to back her away from the feeder. She is trained now, I really no longer need the flower. She knows where the sugar water is! I'd also like to get the male. My wife brought me the the flower, I might make more use of that. I have more energy today.

Still inching up.

Dave, sorry to hear about your illness, and trust that you will soon recover.

I was in your AZ Highways hummer workshop a while ago, and after a permanent move form MI to AZ, I dug out my notes on your workshop. Are there any recent updates on your hummer techniques? I tried the url on your handout without success. Do you have a current website?

Thanks, and best wishes.

Bill

These last several rounds of chemotherapy hit me very hard. The good news is that it has driven the cancer back but I'm still very sick and weak. No hummer photos for me this year.

Perhaps this will help you get started:

I have not left the house in over three months and have refused company, because I'm so sick. It's been a while since they have injected more chemo drugs into me and have stopped doing so. I'm recovering but it sooo slow.

I have a new 600mm f/4 lens that I was going to use this year because I believe that using a longer lens and backing away from the bird will result in more depth of field. (That's what the math says.) I pooped out before I could try it. The hummer are most active in the Spring where I live. Maybe next Spring I'll try again.

Very glad to hear that you're in recovery. I know from family/friends' experiences that chemo can be a real trial.

That lens is a BIGGIE!! Have you thought about just throwing a canopy over it and camping under it? Just acquired the newer Tammy 150-600. We have lots of h'birds here in the Phoenix area, and I'll give it a try when I return from an upcoming trip to Alaska.

Warm regards,

Bill

That is a HUGE lens!!!
Wow!!
Glad you are feeling upbeat after your ordeals. I am recovering from being bedridden for a year after a debilitating health episode. It is not easy. Photography works well because it can be done at various activity levels yet is so artistic and expressive, and healing.
Continue to get better.
Prayers.

love your "hummer" work!!!

Wow a year! That makes my 3 months seem like a walk in the park. I have a recovery plan. I'm fortunate that I own 13 acres of heavily wooded forest surrounding my house. I had cut a meandering hiking trail through my woods. Most of it is in deep shade and I love to hike it. This year it had became over grown with weeds. It depressed me to look at how the weeds blocked my trail. I hired a young man from the church next door to re-open my trail. He did a good job.

My plan is that I grow stronger and then we get a few cooler days, I'll hike my ever increasing sections of the trail. I have a friend who tells me that he will gladly hike it with me when I'm ready.

You can see that I have a lot of motivation to regain my strength.

18 acres here in Northern Arizona. Cleared for our 2 horses and riding. Wish I had a forest in my back yard. That's incredible.
You're doing great! I'm on a slow recovery. Small walks. Been able, finally, to get out with my cameras a bit. It's good therapy. Meandering stream along one side of our land. I'm trying to work up to your level of motivation.
Do you have more "hummers" to post????
aloha,
jim
