Hi ggttc,

I'm VERY pleased with my 28-200g (no vr). It is super sharp and focuses to 18" through the complete zoom range. Here is a sample from eBay = https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-28-200mm-AF-G-Zoom-Lens-Excellent-Condition/112412625602?hash=item1a2c508ac2:g:9NwAAOSwFV9Xw9N5. Take care & ...

Everyone is suggesting Lenses within the same focal range as the 24-120, allow exception for the 2.8's. Why do that? if you are looking for a walk-around lens buy the 24-120, you clearly want it. It's not "the same house", it's the photographer. O'course you could do a 70-200 :-)

"You can get a great used 28-105 F3.5-F4.5 for around $120 or less. Tiny, has a 1:2 close focus magnification, all around great lens. You will need a camera that has an internal focus motor."

Can buy the Nikon NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4 AS G for about $550 used from mpb so I would like to stay in that price range...don't need reach much over 100mm...

Just bought gently used D800e.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I would look at the older Sigma 24-135 f2.8-4.5 full frame, no VR, reviews are very GOOD ! - you will like the reach.

The Tamron SP's are also quite nice either 28-105 2.8 or 35-105 2.8. The 35-105 is much smaller/lighter.

The Nikon 24-120 f.4 VR lens is a marvelous lens. All of the suggested replacements are also excellent lenses, but do NOT have the VR feature, which permits sharp images with no motion-induced unsharpness because of the VR feature. If nearly all of your images are taken on a tripod, the VR feature is superfluous, but if not, VR is invaluable. Many photographers will only purchase new lenses that have the VR feature, which is why ( as noted above) otherwise excellent non-VR lenses are selling 'cheaply.'

Will take a look at the 28mm version and 35mm.

I have both. Both are cost effective and sharper than you'd guess. The 28-105 has virtually ZERO distortion. If you buy a 35-105, make sure it's the D version. From what I've read, the earlier version wasn't very sharp. Also keep in mind that the 35-105 D can only focus to about 3 feet. What you give up with these two lenses is a bit at the wide end and VR, but if you've carried around the 24-120, you'll be surprised by how much more compact and lighter these lenses are.

I am not sure why you are looking for similar lenses when you say you are coveting your wife’s 24-120 lens. Just buy another one for yourself. You and she might have the same lens but most likely will use it to take very different photos of the same scene. That is a good thing. If you buy a different but similar lens I guarantee you will still covet your wife’s lens. Just buy it.

I second the 18-105 suggestion. I have had one on my D7000 for a couple of years and I can't imagine a better all around lens.

I just thought of something. How about a better lens for the D800e instead of a merely a similar lens? Some flavor of 24-70 f/2.8?
