My wife has the above mentioned lens, which I covet...looking for something similar because there is really no need for two of the same lens in the same house. Can buy the Nikon NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4 AS G for about $550 used from mpb so I would like to stay in that price range...don't need reach much over 100mm...

Just bought gently used D800e.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I recently purchased an AF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5D used from KEH for about $120. It's a nice little lens.

You can get a great used 28-105 F3.5-F4.5 for around $120 or less. Tiny, has a 1:2 close focus magnification, all around great lens. You will need a camera that has an internal focus motor.

the 28-105 is a full frame lens - I have one that I use from time to time.

This was taken with the 20-105 and a D700.

KEH has the famed 24-70mm F2.8 for $1200 or so. Ever since Nikon brought out the VR version, the non-VR lens has gone for "cheap." It's more money, but in my view, it's worth every penny (used).

My D7100 came with an 18-105 that I love. I have several others, some prime some zoom up to 400 mm but I can't find anything I like better that the 18-105,

You might try Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 $400 this is an all-some indoor lens where flash is not allowed, downside no VR but the speed will compensate

The 28-105 is a great lens, and the close up quality adds versatility not seen in many lenses. One of my all time favorites.

Second on the 85 1.8, if you don't have one. Can be had for $400 and under in great shape. I bought one used from B&H about 3 years ago for my D800. Love it. Portrait, macro, and walkaround prime.
