Does not allow Spanish being spoken on work time.

My father came to So-Cal in 1956. He worked for well known co in NY. Was transferred to manage a tech division.

A group of workers were speaking in Spanish about my father in a derogatory manner.

He told all the workers in that area that Spanish was not be spoken on the workroom floor. HE SPOKE IN SPANISH.

Word spread through the division that he knew everything that was spoken.

This is truthful tale. BTW: My father was born in Scotland & learned Portuguese also.

One of the wonderful aspects of being born, raised, or just spending a good deal of time in a European country is that most residents there speak more than just their native language. I've friends from Germany who speak German, of course, French, Spanish, Italian, and British English. Most of his friends did the same.

I've gone to well known stores (K Mart especially) and the person behind the counter couldn't or wouldn't speak English. Complaints were a waste of time and breath, so I and my family just don't shop there.

Both my parents were immigrants. We were never allowed to speak any language other than English in the company of those who only spoke English. It was very important to them to "acclimate and assimilate" to their chosen country.

My father's parents were Italian immigrants who came to this country over 100 years ago. They were so proud to be Americans that they refused to speak Italian in the home. They spoke English from the start. Although their children may have understood Italian, having been raised around other Italians, none of them could speak it fluently. The only time I ever heard my Grandfather speak Italian was when he got upset.....which was after losing at Pinochle. Then he didn't want us kids to know what he was really saying!!

I'm sure a self-imagined "law and order© American patriot©" like yourself fully understands that American LAW does NOT require a person to speak English to become an American citizen, so your assertion that you MUST speak English if you live here is actually counter to American law. You would think that a law and order© American patriot© would know this, and a REAL one WOULD, which makes you neither.

Perhaps kd7eir you need to re-assess your own understanding of "American LAW". Here's a quick summary without all the exemptions.
Note point #6 in "Naturalization Eligibility Requirements" from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service page - Naturalization Eligibility Requirements:

Before an individual applies for naturalization, he or she must meet a few requirements. Depending on the individual’s situation, there are different requirements that may apply. General requirements for naturalization are below.

•Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

•Be a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least 5 years.

•Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.

•Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

•Show that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

•Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

•Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

•Be a person of good moral character.

•Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution

I truly wanted to learn and speak Spanish for I visit Mexico quite frequently. I eventually gave up even though I tried to understand what they were saying for they just spoke too fast for me to catch on to what they were saying. I now speak one or two word sentences and just smile. That and a nice tip seems to get me by.

My Step-father spoke 7 languages and tough French, but if speaking other than English when someone would walk up he would proclaim, in the language being spoken, they needed to speak English where newly arived would not think they were talking about them.

When I saw his comment I wanted to check out his profile page to see what other comments he made. Except for one post about selling a camera and one in General Chit-Chat, I see all of the other 227 posts he created were in The Attic section. That tells me a lot about kd7eir and his mindset.

Perhaps you did not know that, even though you are using Am Radio Call (kd7eir), Only place authorized to give the Am Radio test other than English in the U S is Porto Rico and they must give their call on the air in English. Now I have declined to sign test results where the test was given verbally in another language.
