Hummers being so small, fast and able to turn, hover or fly backward don't much fear us big clumsy humans. They get used to us, some people with enough patience get them to feed out of cups of nectar they hand hold. I have seen one picture of a guy with about 6 of them perched on his arm and hand with at least that many more lined up for their turn.
When sitting quietly I have had two of them use my head for a racing pylon when playing "chase the birdie". I felt air move on my ear one came so close. And while watering potted plants or filling the bird feeders* with seeds I have had one hover less than a foot from my head, eyeball me "What are you doing here?" and then go to the other nectar feeder a whopping 12 feet away.

*One of my double crook neck "shepherd's staff" style poles has a seed feeder on one side and a nectar feeder on the other. The hummer was so intent on the feeder it didn't notice me until it circled the feeder looking for a spot clear of honey bees.
