Hey everyone -
I get questions just about every day about Back Button AF - from what it is, to how to set it up, to actual usage. So, I decided to put a free 30-page e-book together that covers back Button AF for all the current Nikon cameras.
The guide goes over the basics of why you would want to use BBAF, then gives step-by-step setup instructions for all the current Nikon bodies, then tells you how to use it, and finally goes over FAQs. It's 100% free, so check it out:

Thanks for the reference. Will this work on the D300S?
Canon? I just bought the canon 5D Markiii and need to set it up. Guess I will have to google it. Ugh!

It doesn't specifically cover it, but I'm sure it'll get you going in the right direction :)
Steve Perry's auto focus book is excellent. I didn't understand the real need for back button focus and how it really worked until I read his book. I'm waiting for his book on the Nikon exposure.

Thanks Steve for your informative books. I purchased the Secrets/AF book and also downloaded your BBAF supplement last night even though I already had it in book. I was previously thinking I should leave my D500 on AF-C all the time when using BBAF and when your BBAF addition said to use AF-C on moving subjects and AF-S on stationary objects. Could you help me understand. Thanks Steve

That section was describing how AF-s and AF-C are tropically used with shutter release focus. You only want to use AF-S / AF-C when NOT using BBAF - Aways keep it in AF-C for BBAF :)

In looking back at the guide, I can see where that may have been confusing. I've just updated the guide to prevent further confusion :). (I put a note above ether AF-S and AF-C section the mentioned this is how those modes are typically use with shutter release AF).

Hi Steve, Thanks for the 32 page free download. I have been using BBAF for years and am always asked by other club members to set their camera (not the same model as mine) to do it. I fumble around and usually get it but with your free download I will now just give them your web page.
I now need help. I am not fast enough or steady enough to spot focus on birds in flight and hold that spot on the moving bird while using AFC. I want to set my D7200's U1 setting for 21 focus points so that when I am shooting BIF I just have to move the dial to U1. I have not been able to get this to work. Is it possible?
Hey Steve. Just another voice to those who havenβt read your ebook: worth the money and time it takes to read. Actually, I go back time and again for help. PS: I gave you a shout out about how to handle a long lens, in my last upload. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words and referrals.
I always tell people if I don't know something I tell it straight up and this is one of those times - I've never used the user banks, so I really don't know. One of these days, I'll sit down and take a look, it just seems like, in the past when I've played with them, I've found them of very limited use (this was years ago).
Thanks for the kind words everyone - glad you like the guide :)
Thank you for this! Although I shoot canon I found this to be very helpful! Do you by chance know which setting you would change on a mark iii for the release priority? There is first, second and the one shot s af release priority? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,
Sandi
