What lens would you have used for this Macro Shot

Gecko are extremely quick and skittish... so I don't think they make a "true" macro lens with long enough focal length and sufficient working distance. Not that true macro levels of magnification are needed for this shot.

The 200-500mm was a good choice... I might have used a 300mm with 1.4X or a 100-400mm zoom.... both of which are more than adequate for a shot like that. My 300mm f/4 is able to do around 0.27X and the 100-400 can go slightly over 0.30X, if memory serves. Plenty of magnification for that image.

Great shots! Love these little guys. And they are skittish. A 200-500? I have sooo much to learn!

Sony A77II with Minolta 70-210 @ 210, 12mm tube, and Clear Image Zoom if needed.

You use what is on the camera & if used properly, with the best glass, and with a little luck, you will get a photo you like.
I've shot some very nice macros of dragonflies with a 500mm prime & 1.4x attached, and some birds with a 105mm micro, as well as a panorama of elk in a field stitched together shot with a Nikkor 200mm micro.

It would be shot with whatever lens was on my camera at the moment as a moment is all you have with those guys. I would prefer a 105mm.

I have used the Canon 300 2.8 with 2X on monopod for Dragonflies - works great !

I commend you for your patience, persistence and vision behind this superb photograph. I have a pretty good idea of the location (I can shut my eyes, smell the flowers, and picture it) and, if I am right, you were feet away from a magnificent vista and panoramic view that would have taken all of 30 seconds to shoot and you'd be on your way.

But then you'd just have another one of the millions of those shots that have been taken over the decades since Punchbowl opened.

Your VISION and hours of effort devoted to that Bird of Paradise delivered a beautiful portrait of a very elusive fellow! Kudos and congratulations on a very memorable photo!

They are fun to capture with a long lens. Nice image. Looks like you are already having fun with it. They are a plentiful target on the islands.
