I am at the point of buying software for processing photos. I do not think I will go with Lightroom cause of the monthly fee. I may not process files for a month or more so it seems like paying monthly fees would be a waste of money. I am at the crossroad at this point. The three programs I am considering are Luminar, Affinity and On1. I know this topic has been discussed many time and do not want to waste to much time on it. I like the fact that Luminar is intuitive and easy to work with and there are a lot of reviews that say it is a good program and will be a competitor to Lightroom at some point. It has a ton of filters and they are going to have the dam feature in it probably have it now. Affinity seems like a good app too. On1 now is selling their app for 69 dollars right now and seems like a good app from the reviews on line as well. The other question I have is the HDR feature that lets you use raw files my camera only supports jpeg images only for HDR. I see that luminar has a program called Aurora HDR but it is 100 bucks. Do any one of the three apps I mention have HDR built in that does a good job? My gut is leaning towards Luminar since I am new to processing raw photos and the reviews say for new eyes this is a great program to work with. Anyone that uses any of these programs could you reply why you like one over the other.

Thanks
I am at the point of buying software for processin... (show quote)

Consider that if you buy an editing program it will be out dated eventually But the cloud will update daily at no charge..

Awhile back, I downloaded the free Paint.net for its graphics.
Last summer I took the plunge into digital with the purchase of a Nikon D3200. I was old school with a couple of Nikon Ftns.
I realized that I had a pretty good package with Paint for post processing. At first I shot jpeg only ('cause I didn't know better).
I learned about RAW. For Nikon, the files are .NEF. However, I couldn't upload my RAW files, so I went on Paint.net/forum and found out I had to install a RAW plug-in. Instructions for all this can be found in the forum.
There are also a whole bunch of other plug-ins available.
The basic Paint package has all the tools necessary for post.
white balance, levels (aka histogram), curves (similar to levels), noise reduction, sharpen, b&w, brightness/contrast, color saturation to name a few.
You can also get plug-ins for the above that give you finer control.
For now, I'm satisfied with it and it's free.
You can't do HDR, but there is an HDRish plug-in.
Google Paint.net for a link to their site. It's safe and rated 4 stars.

serif.affinity.com or, google/affinity photo software or, affinityphoto.com or, one of these will bring it up. It sells for $50.00.
Also, go to amazon and type in the same stuff. Amazon also sells for $50.00 with the fulfillment being done by Serif. Basically, you can find this program all over. There is also a workbook that you can buy for the program. It leads you by the hand through an HDR project. Well worth the 50 bucks. You can also find a couple of hundred videos on youtube re' Affinity. You can watch these until you grow old and never repeat. This is a great program. Look it up. Study it.

I've been holding off on the subscription also. Mostly because I don't like to be held to a subscription when the stand alone was working just fine for me and now I'm being held hostage to make the change. I'm going to have to go to it regardless as I have to upgrade my computer soon not because it doesn't work but because companies like Adobe aren't supporting the stand anone anymore. That being said - I don't have much of a choice because I've been using it for so long I do not want to hassle learning a new editor.

I am biased because I have been using Adobe products for more than a decade, but I don't consider the subscription price a large expenditure. Any hobby costs something. Like you, there are months that I don't even pick up the camera, so the software goes unused, but when I need it, it's there for me. And I consider that I get value for my money. The $9.99/month (plus sales tax) is dwarfed by the impulse purchases I make, and they rarely have any lasting value.
