Nikon outsources a lot of their repairs to independent authorized repair facilities. When I worked close to Nikon in Melville and could walk in, a few days was the norm.

I was at Nikon in Melville last year and was told they don't have enough room to house all the techs they need.

I've used the LA Nikon repair facility on two occasions last year for my D500 and a 80-400 lens. Both had extreme dust issues. The D500 was under warrantee and so was the lens. The first time it took over 2 weeks to get the camera back and over a month to get the lens back as they had to back order a part for it. On the second occasion (about 6 months later) I mailed the camera to them (for dust issues again). This time it was about 2 weeks later I got the camera back. I'll never drive to that facility again. Round trip from Orange Co. to LA takes about 4 hours out of one's life, regardless of time of day.

Why did you not send it 2 days USPS Priority to speed up process? But anyway, it probably won't take that long, unless you dropped and completely mangled it. I sent a D 750 for recall, got the same message and it arrived at my house 4-5 days later. They always build in a cushion on those email notices. be sure to report back your actual experience!

If you had read my post you will see I sent it overnight not 2 day, It was there the following day by 1045 am 139 dollars. it took nine days before they checked it in and acknowledged its receipt of my camera.

It's my understanding you have to be a professional photographer to join NPS. A business letterhead plus tax info from the business need to be provided. That elliminates about 99% of hoggers.

Not true, I’m a NPS member I never had to provide business letterhead or tax information, NPS never asked for that information. I did have to get a recommendation and submit images as part of the qualifications. It’s true that all my repairs were expedited and returned withthin a week’s time. Other benefits are if you want a camera body you get first shot at it, I got my D850 in less than a week.

I see one of the qualifications is if you have to have a recommendation, does it have to be from an existing NPS member someone like yourself or would I have to go find someone else? Because I understand with canon a standard turnaround time is about a week but if you join their premier club so to speak it can be returned as quickly as 2 to 3 days I’d be willing to pay for either one of those time frames.

I sent my D500 (overnight Delivery) to LA last Monday 4-2 for repairs and was told it would take 7 to 10 days for repairs. I just recived a confirmation that they recived my Camera into their system today 4-11 and can expect the repairs to take anothe 7 to 10 days and another 3 to 5 days to have it returned to me. Good thing I hadn't planned my vacation in the next couple of weeks. NOT HAPPY

Dear NOT HAPPY. Thank goodness you bought a D500. You will have it back soon enough. And, it will be done to your satisfaction. So, turn that frown upside down and get ready for more good times when your camera comes back. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
PS. Most all of us have been there, and, we all lived to tell the tail.

I was recommended by Jeff Mitchell the Nikon representative for Northern California. I believe one of the requirements to being accepted by NPS is to have another NPS member recommend you. Unlike Canon, NPS only has one level and its free while I've been told by my friends who are CPS members there are different levels depending on if you want to pay or not. On average I have my equipment back within a week when I send it down to LA for repair or cleaning.

It appears Nikon service turnaround takes a lot more time than I would have thought. Canon turnaround would have being around a week and based on my experience, and the experience of many others, it's rare for issues not to be completely resolved to the owners satisfaction. Does Nikon use dealers with repair facilities for their authorized service centers or do they have several large regional service centers like Canon?

they do have some regional repair facilities but only two that are Nikon only... Melville NY and Escondido CA. but their customer service is very lacking for the past few years... used to be the gold standard... today is the pits in my estimation.

Sorry to hear that. Canon's service is fast and efficient, and the quality is first rate. I assumed Nikon's service would have been at least as good if not better. Unlike Nikon USA, Canon will also service grey market gear, occasionally even under warranty!

Planned vacation? You should have another DSLR/Bridge (backup) to take care of such a situation. Most uhh members have more than one camera.

I sent my D7100 into their Melville, NY repair center a couple of weeks ago. Once they had it it didn't take long to get it back. They advised that I use UPS or FEDEX so that the shipment could be tracked. With insurance I paid $50+ for 5-day service. Nikon did the repair and had it back to me in less time. Their quotes are conservative and are probably realistic for when the shop is inundated with work. Hopefully, there will not be a next time. But if there is I'll opt for USPS. They track shipments as well. What's interesting is that Nikon charged me about $15 for shipping the camera back to me via UPS. I received it within 3 days versus the aforementioned 5 days for $50. Us little guys don't have much leverage with the likes of UPS and FEDEX compared to corporations...
