Great shot indeed. While I would venture to say that most of us have witnessed what could have been an outstanding photo, a big part of capturing it comes from being ready. Had I been in milestogo shoes I don't think I would have gotten that photo as I don't carry my rig around ready to go. May I ask what did you use to take the photo and if you have your camera by your side just in case? Doesn't looks like you could be close enough to pull the cellphone without scaring out the big bird.
Nice action image. European Starling--yellow beak, small size (compared with a crow). This male is in breeding plumage...green and purple coloring on neck and breast. Starlings are considered a pest bird.
I was going through the parking lot when I noticed a person in a car was looking at something. I pulled up about 30 feet from the birds. I had my camera on the front seat. I was able to get 4 shots before they flew away. I was using a Canon SX10 with a 20X zoom.
I guess the hawk didn't do anything wrong so he doesn't have to eat crow.

I've watched crows bug hawks and have wondered why the hawks don't turn on them, although I believe this is a Starling. I wonder whether a lesson was learned from this encounter.
Very nice capture and timing.
