I would like to put my ball head on my monopod. Is there an adapter for the difference in the diameter of the monopod screw and the threaded opening of the ball head? The opening for the ball head is larger.

Yes, they make and adaptor to go from 1/4-20 to 3/8-16- check at the B&H site.

Check your monopod screw, all the better models have a reversible screw with a 3/8" mount on the other end, only the cheaper ones do not have this feature. Also, I recommend a good tilt head rather than a ball head for a monopod, the ball head is MUCH more difficult to keep level, especially with a heavier lens mounted.

Tried ball head on monopod to much movement for me, changed to tilt head.

A ball head allows a lot more adjustment than a tilt - just be sure to keep it tightened during use.

I agree, ball head on monopod is bad, get yourself a tilt head.

In rough terrain, among brush piles, on fallen trees, rocks, boulders, etc., you often cannot put the monopod on the ground by your feet, but there’s usually something somewhere you can rest it against. You can then lock the ball head in almost any position you need, where you’re pretty limited with a tilt head. A monopod is useful for a whole lot more than just tracking moving subjects.

All you need on a monopod is the ability to go up and down with tilt head , which you can't do with ball head without turning the slot around. You pan righ and left with monopod. I am not going to rest monopod on anything with $ 3000.00 plus equipment on it.

Your use of a monopod must be different than mine. For me, a monopod provides some stability and some support, but I'm still involved, so in case of an "incident" I'd be right there to prevent a bad situation from becoming really bad.

You should use a tile head on a monopod, not a ball head.

I use a ballhead on a monopod... mainly because I already had the ballhead sitting in a drawer and figured I might as well use it.

This particular ballhead uses a single control knob. All movements are locked with a twist on it. That's okay use on a monopod. Works fine for me. BUT you really only need the tilt movement. No need for the panning axis of the head, since you can simply rotate the entire rig.

There are more compact heads with higher weight capacity made specifically for monopods.... they only provide the tilt movements.
