I shoot with a 5DMKIII and EF L 100-400 II lens;mostly wildlife. Love the versatility of this combo. I am considering an EOS M5 as a second camera to carry on my belt (Cotton Carrier holster) for landscape and other wide angle shooting (I hate changing lenses in the field). Also considering this camera as a backup body in case something untoward happens to my 5DIII. I believe the EF lenses can be used with an adapter for the M5. Wondering about two things:

1) Anyone using the M5?

2) Anyone using the M5 with any of the EF lenses?

thanks for the help.

M5 review by some guys that know a thing or two, especially when it comes to mirrorless gear:

M50 would be a better choice...but still:

I rented the M5 with the adapter. It works seamlessly and very well at least for me.
I waited though on purchase as it is the first very good mirrorless and glad I did as the lower end M50 that just came out shows what is coming from Canon on higher end models so I am going to wait until late this year or next year as it looks like some pretty exciting stuff will be coming out.

In this video, it was mentioned that the viewfinder wasn't framing the same as the picture. What's up with that???

Why do you hate changing lenses in the field? I've been doing that my whole life and never encountered any issues of any kind!

I believe that is why we buy equipment with interchangeable lenses. Otherwise those hating it just get a PS camera and don't waste money on ILCs.

Hence...why would anyone buy a canon mirrorless camera when there are much better choices out there. Canon still has at least a year of refinements before I’d recommend them.

Not according to the "TheCameraStoreTV" video. They seem to think quite highly of it compared to some of the best other choices. There's a lot of things they find that sounds pretty impressive to me.

But at about the 4:58 mark in the video, Mike Drew says:
Quote:
"The viewfinder doesn't seem to give you a real accurate representation of what the picture is going to turn out like. Whereas the screen does, which is kind-of annoying, but I suppose there are worse things."

That seems like a fairly big deal to me, but it's never brought up again.

I'm also curious about something else I haven't seen anyone talking about concerning Canon's dual-pixel technology. It looks to me like the PDAF will only work with vertical details and will be transparent to horizontal detail like Sony's on-sensor PDAF seems to be. Is that the case?

I take my wife’s M5 paired with my 17-40 F4L lens when hiking, it’s quite a saving in weight and size to my 6D/24-105 F4L combination.

Happy with the results.

Sony does not have DPAF technology.
They use phase and contrast detection to try to focus.

They talked about some disappointments that Canon left a few thing out of the M5 that they have in the 80D, and then ended saying:
Quote:
"This year seems to be where Canon has decided to bring their cameras up to where everybody else is going, and make it very, very competitive."

Is that what you are referring to?

Yes, they do not use dual-pixel, but at least some Sony models (including the A9) apparently can't see horizontal detail with their PD implementation. Is that true of dual-pixel technology as well since it also looks like a highly directional implementation of PD?

As a side note, I just pulled out a Nikon 1 V2 to see if its PDAF suffered from detail directionality, and however they built the on-sensor phase detectors, it seems to be able to instantly focus on detail in any direction.

I have been googling the issue here for a while and there seems to be no reference to a failure in horizontal AF with DPAF. Perhaps others can find definitive proof it has this failure.

yes. helpful. there seem to be several favorable reviews of both. Have been considering both and other brands too.
