I started shooting 3 years ago strictly as a hobby. something i really enjoy doing. I enjoy shooting a few pics, (200-300 on any particular outing) culling thru my shots finding a couple good ones and doing a little post processing to make a good photo better. To allow others to "see" what i "saw" when i took the photograph (or thought i saw). Recently my wife has been suggesting i should sell some of my photos. She thinks they are that good. (of course she IS my wife). But i have been contemplating the move more and more...The main issue for me is that i really enjoy shooting now, looking for that great spot, or opportunity. I don't want get to the point where I "have to shoot" to make money. Or where i am looking at a shot as a "moneymaker" type of shot. The photographs i have taken that my wife believes are worth selling are the shots I really just "enjoyed" to get...Not decided which way to go yet...What do ya'll think...

Hi truetexan.... Starting a new business has very little to do with your love of photography, but all to do with "marketing", & making money! You need to know the difference between a "working" photographer and someone that loves to shoot..... Marketing will tell you how many people will pay you money for your shootings.. You and your friends may all be wowed at your photos, but outside of this small group, is there a market there for you to sell to those you don't know? Are your photos something that others like and will want to buy them?.... Its Business!
I would much rather do photography as a "job" then to hate what I do for a living! Business is all about making money!

Do not want to destroy the joy of the hobby.

Doing photography as a business really doesn’t have to take away from the joy of the activity itself. But doing it as a business can lessen your enjoyment of running a business!

For minimal gains. I am retired and don't really care. A few of my photos have sold on stock agencies but not that many. Of course, I am competing, with my 1000 or so pictures out there, with people that put out that many pictures, and very, very good pictures, in a month or three. So I don't expect huge success. Maybe someday. I have heard that some photographers make up to $20,000 a month through stock agencies, but I doubt that all that many people do. Maybe they do though, as they are so good and putting out many pictures all the time. One difficulty with stock agencies is that they have millions upon millions of photos for sale, (at a very low price I might add) and that means huge, huge competition. And there are numerous stock agencies out there.

Would love to get my photography to pay for my adventures or a least part of them. That will be my goal after my retirement. It’s probably not reality but it’s something I’m working on. I’ve got some shots at a large business right now being looked at. Mostly would like to get retirement going.

I would love it. Unfortunately, I'm an oddball and what I like to take photographs of doesn't really sell.

Have you considered stock photo submissions?

I have a photography business that runs itself. According to my Excel spreadsheet, my Photographic Art sales currently are averaging $10,023.01 per month. My target market includes Realtors, escrow agents, title agents, and loan agents, all of whom buy my Photographic Art as close-of-escrow gifts. It's all about marketing. If you know how to market yourself and your products, you can be successful. If you don't know how to market yourself and your products, you still can be successful by hiring someone who does.

Back in August 2015 I shared with UHH how I got started and what my goals were. I have surpassed my goals by a factor of two. Here's my article, "Marketing 101 for Photographers," from August 2015:
