I would love it. Unfortunately, I'm an oddball and what I like to take photographs of doesn't really sell.

I used to sell through galleries. The money per print was good ($350 - $1200 for quality Silver Gelatin prints)
but the number of sales did not quite get me the Mercedes I had my eye on. It got tiresome, especially the
amount of work it is to make darkroom prints. I haven't sold in a number of years but have been thinking of
going back with digital pictures.

I hear you. I like pictures of insects. I saw an extreme close up of a fly's eye when I was younger, and was fascinated.

I love photographing pets and "common things" from odd angles and close up. I started doing "specific shots" such as Tennis shoe, Treadmills, weights etc. and put those up in my workout areas at home. Thought maybe there may be a market for that in health clubs. Been doing this with food, drinks, bar stools etc. put up in the kitchen and bar area at the house thinking there may be a market for restaurants. Maybe someday

Not me. The day I make a buck on photography will be the day it starts to feel like work. However I do aspire to being able to produce 'professional' level photographs.

Very few photographers make really good money. There are exceptions but, it's my opinion that those that make money basically teach on the internet, live seminars, books, workshops and so on. There are some that freelance for publishing companies, advertising companies and, publicity companies. It's a tough business.

Any business that you want to get into takes time and the ability to market your self, also if it's photography your looking at... Every one today sells prints on-line, you have to be able to do events or run tours or some thing else besides selling prints. The camera equipment and skills that you need to make money in photography goes far beyond the ability of taking nice photos.

Not that long ago 1 in maybe 50 owned a camera - of which less than 1% made a living by using it. From newspapers in every town to every celebration. Now everyone has a camera. There are fewer outlets and more people accepting mediocre images. The intrinsic value of an image is such that you need to be a specialist travelling the world (also taking photo's) or creating work so unique that you get asked to travel the world looking for 'first glimpses' that can be made into TV programmes. (photographer or film crew?).
There are a 'names' out there - and the same few pop up very frequently.
Maybe it is still the same few.

The only way I found that finally worked for me was to gather a huge library and then post constantly on F Book and Instagram. Post on groups and gain friends... a great gauge to monitor how good you are.

Photoshop became an obsession and I use it comfortably now but It took several years to be good and efficient. At this point the work now comes to me, but I am very pro active.

The biggest money makers will be business (corporate) and portrait. I have little desire for weddings or real estate, they are too monetarily controlled and saturated by the less talented. I do have friends who package landscape as framed art and are very good at that and make good money.

Most importantly... Your work will be rated on its own merits and demand is directly related to your end product. Create a following and be consistent. Branding is everything and watermarks do work for establishing your brand.

A business should support its self, you and your responsibilities. For me, that has nothing to do photography.
