I have been looking at extenders, and from what I have seen so far, it is not available for DX format cameras such as my D5500. Is there a 2X extender that will fit the D5500 and the 55-300 AF-S combination? I looked at the: Nikon Teleconverter TC-17E II AF-S Lens in the 1.7X. Either 1.7 or 2.0 would work for me.

i may be mistaken, but the camera is not the issue, all teleconverters will fit on the camera in the same way a lens will, but not all lenses will work with a teleconverter. check with nikon's website, or google nikon teleconverter charts

Your 55-300 is not a good candidate for a TC, even if it can be physically mounted to the lens. Your camera model will lose autofocus and the images will soften much more than had you simply cropped from the 55-300 results.

I was afraid of that, and the loss of 1 or 2 F-Stops. Thanks for the input.

You need an extremely sharp and fast lens to be able to get the best out of a lens + TC combination. The 55-300 is not an extremely sharp and fast lens. A 70-200 F2.8, or even a 200-400 F4 would be, however. I have only seen 2 lenses that work well with a 2x TC - the 300mm F2.8 and the 400mm F2.8. Other lenses just aren't sharp enough.

Fmeh! What the heck, buy one have fun, your not making money with your pictures they may very well be shap enough for your purposes. BUT! Only get a 1.4x, a 2x may not allow sufficient light to pass for decent autofocus function. 1.4x’s are cheap on eBay, get a used even off brand to try out. Unless you’re shooting for 24x36 or publications no one but you will really know the difference. It’s a hobby, have fun!

You have a point. For me it is only a hobby. I will keep looking.

Agree completely. Although I do, upon rare occasion, use a 2X TC with a Nikon 400/2.8, I prefer not to. The 1.4X TC I use quite abit with very good results. Best of luck.

There had been so many posts here talking about Tc. bottom line is, tele converter is only good for fast zoom and especially prime lens with appertrue at f4 or less. You will be disappointed using any of them on your already slow zoom.

Hi SpyderJan, if you want to play around with a TC, take a look at:

https://www.amazon.com/Kenko-1-4X-Teleconverter-Nikon-Digital/dp/B002C6QE00/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521647977&sr=1-1&keywords=kenko+1.4x+pro+300+teleconverter&dpID=41bTGnB3NJL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The Kenko should work on your lens. I bought this one for a AF-P Nikon 100-300mm and it works fine. My lens is sharp at the long end to begin with and I don't see appreciable decrease in IQ using it. I do lose a stop in aperture but doesn't make that much difference on bright days, for birding for example. I think that someone mentioned that AF doesn't work on your camera; I'm not sure about that but AF works on my D750. It currently lists for $203 on Amazon but I found a new one there a few months ago for $135. Check around for a better price.
