Our local photography club now has a category for "Cell Phone shots". It has worked out very well, and has attracted some new members who are just entering into photography.

I have an iPhone. I purchased it specifically for photography related software that runs only on the iPhone. However, when I see a photographic subject that I really think needs to be photographed, the last thing I reach for is my phone. I reach for the camera that I usually have with me.

Conversely, when I want to make a phone call, the last thing I reach for is my camera. Two different tools for two different purposes.

Anyone who watches this and thinks iPhones aren’t cameras needs to reevaluate their prejudices.

I've been going thru some of my voluminous collection of family photos that I inherited from my grandmother and it's become clear to me that the average photo I take with my iPhone is better by far than anything she ever shot. I'm talking about the technical quality of the image; sharpness, graininess, dynamic range. Those old point and shoot film cameras just weren't very good. The lenses had a lot of darkening around the edges, soft focus etc. And the b/w film was not so great. Same with the later color images. Just not even close to what my iPhone can do.

Chas, it's quite simple. All you have to do is contact the admins of the site and let them know you'd like to start a section devoted to cell phone photography. They will provide you with all of the information and admin privileges to maintain it.

Two weeks ago, an e-magazine asked permission to use one of my photos. I gave it. The photo wasn’t from my Digital SLR or Medium Format camera.

It was from my iPhone...

The best camera is always the one you have.

I've taken many pictures with my two cell phones. Under the right lighting conditions, and assuming I don't need a long lens, the pictures come out just fine. I don't always carry a camera with me, and it's better to get any picture of something interesting than nothing at all. My son is sending me pictures all of the time taken of my granddaughter on his iPhone. I treasure them as much as any pictures I have.

There have been and will be better sensors available on cell phones. Nokia had an excellent imaging phone years ago. Chinese manufactured phone coming soon will have a 40 megapixel camera, Apple, Samsung, HTC and every other cell phone manufacturer is racing to see who can outdo the other. Motorola has (or had) a modular system that turned the phone into a camera.
Not they are not “cameras” but they serve a purpose. Point and shoot cameras are a thing of the past.

Agreed. There is a lot of prejudice towards smartphone cameras. It's quite sad really. Some of these people just have to feel superior.

Thank God for cell phone cameras. Without them we wouldn't get out daily dose of our 7 month old granddaughter who live 850 miles away. My son and daughter-in-law are not photographers but most of their cell phone pics are sharp enough to print

During my recent vacation, I used my D7500 (with multiple lenses) and my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with its phenomenal camera. The Note 8 has two cameras in the rear; mild wide angle and short telephoto and it also has Pro mode where you can set everything and shoot in RAW mode.

This is one of those pictures. It's the Mayan ruins near Tulum.

I would love to start a a cell phone category.
After reading all the responses after my question it seems its a great idea.
but unfortunately due to my health condition i feel it would be irresponsible of me to commit to something i know at this time i would not be able to be involved in at the level required.

I think it would be good if someone teaches me how to use the cell phone.

This is the icicle thaw this year.
I of course have seen beautiful staged photos of drips with DSLRs and the like. I realize the slight blur
I like what it does to this shot..ive got clearer ones
