This is a clip from the opening episode of an HBO series called The Newsroom. The series is "fiction" not fact. It is based on the writers opinion. It is good television and nothing more.

Do we believe we live in the Greatest Country on Earth - of course we do; just like you Brits and Aussie's. It isn't arrogance. It is called national pride. Our leaders think they know it all and can "fix" every other country. We don't believe that, but we are working on fixing them. Unfortunately, our constitution doesn't permit neutering. 8-)

"Unfortunately, our constitution doesn't permit neutering."
Neutering would correct conditions over the long haul but I think electroshock therapy is what is needed in the short term.
I wonder why service personel such as police, firemen and the military are given psych evaluations and training before being accepted but not budding politicians.
Perhaps there should be training for appropriate conduct and revokable licensing should constituents feel they and the constitution are not being properly represented or supported.

I do so love that dry, English sense of humor.

In the metrics that count - lifespan, education, health, etc. - the US has been declining relative to other countries. If we're so wonderful, why are so many still in poverty, or worse, in jail?

By the way, I don't think the Queen is the answer to our problems.

HA HA HA some folks will believe anything.

'America(s)' is not a country : it's a continent. Often for geographical convenience divided into North America, Central America, and South America.

The former British colony, mainly situated between Mexico and Canada, is I understand, now known as the United States of America.

BTW - I keep meaning to ask, are you getting along, without too many difficulties, without us ? I'm sure you'll get the hang of self-governance, given another hundred years or so ....

The United States of America, has been known as " America ", for as long as it's been formed. Maybe you heard the songs , " God Bless America " ." America the Beautiful ".
What's that famous song about england? Do they even have one ?
BTW-How's the old lady the " Queen " doing. Exactly what does she do for England ? See here in the "colonies ", we don't have to bow to anyone, even if they are worth $ 5 or 10 Billion dollars.
How's your parliament doing ? Stopped raining yet ? People in glass houses.............
quote=ToadSlayer "Why America is the greates... (show quote)

Ahh! A challenge... famous songs about England.

How many do you know but don't know you know?
God Save the Queen
Rule Britannia
Land of Hope and Glory (Pomp and Circumstance in the US of A - played at graduation ceremonies)
Jerusalem

And a word from the Bard of Avon:

"This royal throne of Kings, this scepter'd isle,
This Earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself,
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this Earth, this Realm,
this England."

William Shakespeare: "Richard II" Act 2, Scene 1, 32 to 48

It might be the greatest for you, but not for me.

In my America -
I am taxed on my paycheck by uncle sam and then by my state and then by my town and then i am taxed again for anything i purchase. Every year my government gives billions of dollars as aid or incentive to other nations to to see it our way, paid by those taxes (which go up every year)
My country is besieged with illegal immigrants and my government wont remove them. Welcome to America, if you are of hispanic origin we will give you vouchers for free food and medical care etc all paid for with my taxes.
My country wants to be the worlds policeman and spend billions on wars that have no purpose. There is nothing heroic about making "the ultimate sacrifice" for America.
My government is comprised of millionare lawyers that make corruption their hobby. My country is controlled by wealthy Jews that control wall street, industry, commerce, retail,
and every aspect of my life. Our employers give themselves and their cronies disgusting annual bonuses while my pay is frozen at my starting rate of 4 years ago.
I worked hard all my life and my home is being foreclosed because i had to choose to put food on the table and not see the kids starve and pay medical premiums or pay the crooked bank every month.

I could go on and on but from my perspective.. No,
America is FAR from being the greatest country on earth.

Yes she has her faults but even in your America you can write things like you did and the secret police are not going to take you away in the middle of the night.

Well, she is #1 in my heart and my mind. Nothing in the original post had anything detrimental about America. It's just a shame that we have not taken better care of her.

Funny it is that sometimes whom you fight becomes your best friend i.e. Britain and USA allies for a long long while
I must admit that I have a ton of English and Scottish blood from my bloodlines and have always been proud of it.
Cheerio guvnor.

And Baton Rouge where "Frenchcoast" from went through some real trying times.
There are still people who care, people who go to church, mayors and city councils that care. People who help others in disasters. Paramedics and firemen and policemen and soldiers who willingly put their lives on the line to make it safe for us.
Sorry you got caught up in some nasty stuff.
Better luck in the future.

As for me, I am a PROUD AMERICAN VETERAN who fought in a very unpopular war but I did so because my country sent me to do so whether I agreed or not, but PLEASE do not say there is "nothing heroic" about making the "Ultimate Sacrifice" for America, this only belittles those who have made the Ultimate Sacrifice !!!!! And as far as I am concerned it isn't easy for me either being 100% disabled from that "Unpopular War", it's real tough for millions of Americans nowadays and it ain't getting any easier and won't for a very long time. Maybe it's time Americans put GOD back in their lives and went to church on Sundays and practiced Faith !!! And lastly, America as I know it is a "FREE" country so to those who think it stinks to live in America, well I see no chains holding anyone here.... GOD Bless you, GOD Bless America !!!!
