I am in constant contact with people I met in the 20 yrs I visited and lived in Puerto Moralos - half way between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen aka the Riviera Maya and the fact is it is the cartels fighting each other and local folks that step out of line that are getting "bumped off" - the tourist are left alone as they are their income - yes there are car break-ins and theft of unwatched items but that goes on here too.
BUT - yes I like a bridge camera for my travels - lots of quality in a small package.

considering the high crime rate in Mexico, you were better off having a smaller, and cheaper looking camera, than a fancy DSLR with all the trimmings.
