The very last paragraph of this article tells it all. Avoidance.

Note that this is concerning 42nd st. Photo (not 47th st). Probably not too late to revise the title.

Good on you for calling them out - they definitely deserve it.

42nd Street Photo Shop preys on foreign visitors from all over the world. And they use their scam tactics on these visitors. Knowing when their vacation is over, they most likely won't be visiting NYC again. They just await the next visitors, and start the scam all over again. Why are they still in business?

Sometimes I read their adds for laughs. You can tell they are scam artists, that or just plain stupid. A couple years ago around Christmas they were offering so called special package deals. One was a Canon 6D and all the lenses in the package, except the nifty fifty, were EF-S lenses.

Great question. I filed a complaint about them with NYC and they did nothing. Even with domestic customers, you would think they would get enough complaints to do something.

More on this. The camera and lens were most likely gray market. Who pays for shipping on this size purchase? Best of all, did the buyer really need this camera or would have been better served with a simpler bridge model?

Someone powerful in local government must like them. Despite the complaints. However, there have been at least two individuals on this forum, who have defended them. I wonder were they paid off?

Who in this world is not aware that 42nd Street Camera is not a reputable dealer? The poor old lady did not have anyone to make a formal consultation with about photography in which case she would have been directed to a reputable store like we know are so many of them like Adorama and B&H just to mention two of them.
Despicable is a word that sound nice to me compared to what these guys have done. If still under the return provisions of the store that merchandise should be returned. The Consumer Affair office should be aware of scams such as this.
Good lessons for those who still make business with non reputable, dishonest stores.

Years ago in the film days I called 42nd Street Photo to buy highly rated Vivitar Series I lens they advertised at a very low price. The small print said C/Y mount only, other mounts cost more. When I called the lady there reminded me that this price was only for the Contax mount. When I told her I shot with a Contax she said "S---!" and hung up.

They had a great price on a Nikon D80 but when I insisted I wanted body only (not a package with their crappy lenses) they said it was back ordered. After many calls to check on it the salesperson said unless I bought the extras it would always be on back order. - Dave

Yep, that’s their modus operandi - had the same experience many years ago before I learned better.

Bears out what many of us have been saying for years. Scam artists with absolutely no conscience.
