I might be mistaken, but I thought the 3100 lacked the infared sensor, although the D40, 3000 and 3200 have them. My new 5100 has one on both the front and back, whereas my D40 only has one on front. If your 3100 has one, it will most likely ne a small red dot located on the hand grip where your fingers go when holding it. I have the Nikon remote and to use it, one must go to the menu under shooting modes or shooting settings or something like that. In that menu will be settings for either a single fire, repeated fires as long as you hold the shutter button down, 10 second delay or remote delay. If your 3100 does not have the remote delay setting, then your camera does not have that capability.

eBay lists their cheap remotes as being compatible with many Nikons, including the D3000. Apparently the D3100 lost that IR sensor. Just like the D5100 lost the viewfinder grid lines that the D5000 had. The D5100 has sensors front and rear, which is a real convenience. Nikon giveth and Nikon taketh away.

Thank you all for your help. I went back to the Ritz camera store and spoke to the canera guru... LOL
He asked me waht camera I had and he told me the same thing.. It does not work with the D3100, so to make it good I got a wired remote for free. Can't beat tha. He pluged it into my camera and works great, even the focus works. Took some pictures of the store and I am glad.
Again, a BIG THANK YOU ALL.

I purchased a Vivitar Infared Wireless Shutter Release, model RC6-NIK to use with my d3100. It did not come with instructions on how to use it, just said point it and push the button. I can get it to start the count down timer and hear the shutter click but there are no picture to view. I called the support people at vivitar and the only thing they told me was to go back to their website and download the manual. Well they don't even show the model I bought or a manual. If anyone can help it is appreciated greatly.

My son-in-law has a D3100. Being a nice guy, I gave him an infrared remote during a get together. He could not make it work. I took the camera, and upon examination, could find no I/R window, front or back. Hmmmmm. I did some checking on-line and discovered to our dismay, that they had left this feature off. No need to keep looking.
