The statements that the 2nd Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights was done as , "....a protection of the people from an over intrusive government", and, "The Second Amendment protects your other Amendment rights; Free speech, Free Press, Freedom of Religion," is incorrect. It apparently was made up and repeated over and over again until a lot of people assume it to be correct. The real reason for the 2nd Amendment was to preserve slave patrols, sometimes called militias. When our founders were trying to pass the Bill of Rights, they needed one more state to ratify the amendments. Virginia would only agree if their slave patrols (militias) were guaranteed the right to posses guns. A second reason was for protection of the US government against foreign invaders and in cases of insurrection. The militias referenced in the amendment were intended to be used by the state's for slave patrols and by the US for defending the country. See the references below, especially the last one which is an excerpt.

In United States v. Cruikshank (1876), the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that, "The right to bear arms is not granted by the Constitution; neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence" and limited the scope of the Second Amendment's protections to the federal government.[9] In United States v. Miller (1939), the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment did not protect weapon types not having a "reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia".[

The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says "State" instead of "Country" (the framers knew the difference -- see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason and James Madison were totally clear on that... and we all should be too.

In the beginning, there were the militias. In the South, they were also called the "slave patrol

Your love for fake news and fake history seems to be boundless.

Why don't you read the FEDERALIST PAPERS, written by the authors of the COTUS so the dumb masses could learn what it meant, and actually learn the truth?

Thank you for the history lesson and it gave me understanding that I was unaware of.
Not knowing all of the history and whether or not it is totally relevant to us today, since I am sure that they even in their wisdom did not understand all of the ramifications of what they decided. How could they have possibly known what we would be doing at this time? But I do believe they were inspired to make the decisions that they made, even though they may not have completely understood. Isaiah 55:7,8,9. The Lord God perceives things we have no comprehension of. You see the Bill of Rights was not just written for them but for us also.

You in your efforts to degrade me telling me that I like fake news is ludicrous.

Whether or not you agree some things just make common sense. It just makes common sense that without our guns to protect us we become vulnerable to the whims of those that have more power than we do. I can see that without our guns the government could run rod-shod over us and take away all of our rights. There are those that want to do it right now. And given the chance will do exactly that. There are two things that are unquenchable to some, money and power. And when they have enough money power is their next option. Their lust for power emboldens them but leave you with no power. And no it is not written anywhere that that is the purpose of the 2nd Amendment.

One can actually intellectualize themselves too much. MAYBE that has to do with a power of a different sort.

What's amazing to me in reading the Federalist Papers is the wisdom and intellect displayed by the Founding Fathers and their insight in the foundation of America. The Declaration of Independence and America's Constitution has to be two of the greatest documents ever written (IMHO).

Thank you for your post and enlightenment. Following are three post from three liberals that add nothing just doing as they do best, stirring the pot.

It's all or nothing with you people. A good first step is every owner of a semi auto will be licensed, the firearm registered and capacity limited to six rounds for civilians and non professional shooters. Primary producers on the land would have higher capacity magazines. Use existing laws to hammer criminal possession as these people are caught.

So the people who wrote the COTUS don’t know anything about the COTUS?

Yet another Frosty pantload.
