Maybe I got a bad copy, but I wasn't crazy about the images. I would rather have the pigeon poop on my head than bring that lens

If you did (get a bad copy) then so did I and SLRGear.com

Just sayin’.....

This coming Tuesday, I Am participating in a photoshoot of New York City's Grand Central Station, as a guest of the Pictorial Photographer's of America. As most of my interest and experience lies in outdoor photography, I am not sure what to bring for this indoor photoshoot. My choices are between a Pentax k50 DSLR with a Sigma 17-50 F2.8 lens, a Panasonic G7 with a 14-140 lens, and a Sony Alpha 6000 with an 18-55 kit lens. I am not bringing a tripod, or external flash. Any suggestions welcome

Depending on what you are going after, any one of your cameras and lenses should do fine. The Pentax with the 17-50 F2.8-F4 might give you a slight edge but whichever you take will be a challenge with high ISO and handholding. The bad news is that the really cool stuff like the glass balconies, the room where the captains of industry would have their cigars and cognac, and the FDR's personal RR car which was directly accessible from the Waldorf Astoria hotel are now off-limits. But you should have more than enough material to shoot. Too bad you aren't bringing a tripod. I think that will limit you a bit.

Truth be told, I am not a fan of bringing a bag full of gear on things like this. One lens, one camera - preferably a prime lens that would be a bit faster than F2.8 or F4-5.6. Being "covered" with focal length may work against you, since your lens will pass a lot less light making it less functional.

If you're from NY, no clarification needed - only "foreigners" need this clarification. A New Yorke clearly "gets it!"

OK, I'm a "foreighner.". The only time I've been to NYC was in 1966, when I met some of your more "elite" citizens who called me a "baby-killer" and spat on my Class A uniform. I guess I just need a lesson in the difference.

I saw that thread. I believe she will be attending the same photoshoot, and is bring a canon bridge camera with a tripod; totally different setup than what I am contemplating

I am not looking at the gear but the opportunity to meet another hog.

Makes me glad I missed that war. Vietnam veterans got flack from both sides of the political spectrum; From the left wing hippies and commies for being in the war, and from the extreme right for "losing" it, a point well made in the first Rambo movie

I have the 16-50 kit lens, but don't like it. As for the K-50, I find it somewhat slow in low light focus. I am in between the Sony and the Panasonic

GCT {Grand Central Terminal} isn't going anywhere; you have plenty of time for anything to focus. Motivated by that other thread I found my pictures from 1978 and scanned them; I got reasonable pictures hand-held with ISO 100 film loaded in a rangefinder camera with a 45mm f/1.9 lens. I would recommend that you focus primarily on low light performance, wide aperture, and availability of wide angle. You may want to take some close-up views, but I found the grandeur to be the real story, and you will need some wide-angle to capture that. Image Stabilization will also help.

Sorry that happened to you. But it was a very tumultuous time, and you were caught in the middle.

You shouldn't let that stop you from coming back - it's a pretty cool town. Though my kids don't think so - one lives in Oakland, the other in Marina Del Ray, and the third in Dublin (Ireland, not CA)

Yeah, but what about Grand Central Station?

Truthfully, the real attraction for a photographer is not the architecture, which is amazing, but it has been photographed at least 66,993,209 times with everything from a cellphone or a disposable film camera to some really large sheet film view cameras. It's the people who come and go - if you are a street photographer it is a real dream. . . Lot's of things going on, lots of stories to tell. Great place to find them all. Then you can go down to Grand Central Station and see a lot more - including some really talented buskers, more interesting places and people, etc.

Right off-hand, I'd take the one with the greatest range. In your case, Sailer - that'd seem to be the G7 with the 14-140 ....
Wrong. What's needed is a wide prime.
