Some of the version 1s developed an internal ribbon cable issue that was expensive to have Canon repair. There were a zillion of these lenses sold, and probably only a small percentage developed the issue, but it is a known problem. i’ve had my version 1 for 4-5 years with no issue.

I had read this as well, however mine didn't suffer from that, just lens creep. Mine was also 6-7 years old and after having read and researched the reviews on version II, I simply upgraded.

I'll second those who recommended the EF-S 18-135mm IS USM. I have one and it is the most used lens on my 80D. It gives a really good range for most of my needs. I also have the EF-S 10-18 and EF 70-300, but use the 18-135 the most.
