What is a good walk around lens for the Canon 7D?

Canon EF 24-105L IS. The MkII version if it fits your budget, the MKI if it doesn’t.

I agree with Trix. My 24-105L II rarely leaves my 80D and would be an excellent choice for your 7D.

I use a Canon 15-85. It's not an L lens, but it is better built than a kit lens. I really like being able to get down to 15mm on a crop sensor. I find that a 24-70 isn't wide enough for me.

The 2 best lenses for the Canon 7 D in my opinion for a walk around would be the 15-85 or the premium 17-55 2.8. The 24-105L is a great lens but better suited for a full frame camera. The 1.6x FOV turns the 24 into a 38 mm equivalent on the wide end which is a limitation in this case.

I use to own a Canon 7D and I bought it with the 17-85mm f4-5.6 lens. It is better than the kit lens and I took very nice photos with it. With the time I started to buy some fix lens (50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, 24mm f2.8) and 70-200mm f4 L thinking with the possibility some day to go a FF camera. Today I own also a Canon 5D MIII and I use in every camera the FF lens that they have better performance than the APS-C lens.

I'm curious. Why is the 24-105L better suited for a full frame camera? I ask because that is a lens I would like to purchase used for my 80D.

The limitation that was pointed out is that with the 1.6 crop factor of Canon crop bodies, the widest it will go is the field of view of a 38mm on a FF. Personally, I’m not an ultra wide shooter, and I found the equivalent range of ~38 to 168 to be perfect for my tastes when I used it on my 7D.

But the field of view is a limitation of the crop camera, not the lens. I would still expect it to be a much sharper lens than a non L lens on a crop camera.

The Canon 24-105mm f4 L lens will suit your camera 80D perfectly well and you will take excellent shots because it is a very good lens. The difference is that the wide angle is less pronounced than a FF body. So you must walk a litlle more to take wide angle shots. On the other hand see the Tony Northrup videos in You Tube and his rcommendations is better glasses instead of priced cameras.

But isn't the wide angle on my 80D with an L lens the same as the wide angle on a non L lens?

Are we talking about a 7d or a 7d2 ? Reason I'm asking is that I am considering a 24-105L as a birthday gift for me. Currently using an 18-200 which came as a kit with my 7d.

I have both crop and FF Canon cameras. I have had several lenses that have been mentioned. I have 24-105 f/4 L that is very sharp on my FF. I do find that my EFs 15-85 is my best go to solution. I do have a wide angle preference.
